ok people we recently bought PA for the band for the first time and we play in my basement ,its not that big of a space. The problem is when we crank the vocals it produces such a horrifying sound that can kill an elephant.we can increase the volume to a certain level after that nada.whats happening here?

Re: help with crazy sounds from pa

sounds like the microphones are feedbacking from the volume of the monitors or PA speakers... move stuff around so the mic is not picking up the monitors or pa speakers

Re: help with crazy sounds from pa

That's feedback, alright. Pay attention to which way the mikes are pointing with respect to the speakers. Not just the primary direction; also watch out for the first bounce off walls, ceiling, etc.

If there's one note that predominates in the feedback, trying notching it out with a graphic EQ (if your PA amp/board has one). Turn the PA up to the point where the feedback is ringing, but not howling. Then, pull the EQ sliders down one at a time to find out which one kills the feedback note. (Put the wrong ones back to "flat" where they started. When you find the right one, pull it down a bit at a time and increase the volume until another note takes over.

You might want to try this with the second feedback note as well, but after that it's diminishing returns.

Consider turning everything else down, too..

When I hear basement I immediately think echo chamber. If you are dealing with concrete walls and floors the sound will bounce around a lot and make feedback problems worse. Get some carpet on the floor and even on the walls to help soak up the high frequency reflections. And +1 to what Rich_S and WhoFan said too.
