Help with guitar

I am thinking about one of two new guitars. I am looking at a Epi les paul black beauty with the 3 pickups and gold hardware, or the Epi les paul standard cherry sunburst with the alnico5 pick ups. Now I am wondering who has played them and which would be good for classical rock and blues. The standard has a carved maple, but it does not appear the black beauty does. I think the black one is only one ply. Eventually I may install new mags in the Pick ups or replace them. But would like to wait for a bit prior to doing that.
Thanks for any and all honest opinions.

Re: Help with guitar

Honestly dude, it wouldn't surprise me if both guitars were essentially made the same. the only difference between the 2 models are probably just cosmetic. Chances are both guitars are mahagany/alder body with a faux maple top on the standard that wouldn't really give it a different tone.

Having said that, I would just pick the one that appeals the most to you. I love the way customs look. But I also love a sweet looking flame or quilt top on a LP. I don't really like guitars with 3 pups, I find the middle one gets in the way and the tone didn't really do anything extra for me. I prefer 2 pups in my LP's.

Edit: oh yeah, I forgot the most important part: play it first and be sure all the electronics work properly. don't be too concerned with how the pups sound. in six months you'll be wanting Duncans.

That is what I thought. But one problem, no where to play on at. I was ordering through Musicians friend.
Yep, the PU's will be gone in about 6 months for something better. I owned a Gibson ages ago and loved it , the sound was great through my old Peavy 4x12 cabinet. Now I have a trillion responsibilties, ( kids being 3 of them, along with a 1200. mortgage mothly), I have to go for something cheaper right now. But granted this will not be last for me. I have my eyes on a Les paul custom. 3 grand worth.........:D But it has to wait for a few years.

Re: Help with guitar

if you are byuing it at musicians friend you should be able to return it within 45 days if you don't like it. I have not had to return anything there but my friend have and they tell wer suprized how painless it was.
