Help with Marshall DSL 40C

So the other day I was warming my tubes up in standby and something strange happened.

If you own this amp (newer, imported version) you'll probably know that when you turn the power on, the power indicator in the switch itself lights up immediately, and a half second or so later there is a "click", and the channel indicator light comes on. While my amp was in standby, I happened to be looking right at the light when I heard the click again, and the channel light went out, but the power light remained on, showing there was power to the amp in some form. I switched standby on (off?) to see if it would make any noise but it didn't. Completely silent and unresponsive. The tubes glow and the power light comes on but that's the only sign of life now.

The first thing I did was check the fuse in the mains, only to find it to be perfectly fine. After posting about this problem on the Marshall amps forum I was guided to check the FS3 slo-blo fuse for the low voltage circuitry, but again that fuse and the others I could find on the board were fine.

It's looking like I'll have to take it to a service shop but I'm checking here to see if anyone has any tips or has had a similar problem as well before I do. Hope to hear something good but I'm not holding my breath lol. Thanks guys.

Re: Help with Marshall DSL 40C

The click you hear right after powering up are the channel switching relay(s) engaging. Something is wrong with that system or the power supply for it. With the relay(s) open the signal path of either is probably dead ended, so no sound, just to give you an idea of what is likely going on. Yup you will need to take to a repairman. But try replacing the fuses on the board anyway. Sometimes they can look fine and still be blown.

Thanks for the info! I had heard from someone else that it sounded like a relay but didn't explain why like you did so thank you for that. I will be calling someone this weekend to have a look at it.

I agree. Replace the fuses anyway. They don't always look blown.
