Help with modding a Full Shred

Hi, everyone. So, here's the story: I need a pickup that sounds like a strat, fills a humbucker route and doesn't hum. Basically, a humbucker that sounds like a single coil. After months of back and forth with the Custom Shop, they denied every suggestion I made. They included:

-A stack inside a humbucker cover;
-A linear humbucker inside a humbucker cover;
-A humbucker with only one coil active;
-A beefed up wide-range style pickup.

For some reason not given to me, they don't think any of those things are possible.

Currently, I use a Full Shred in the neck of both of my guitars. I'm thinking of removing the pole pieces of one of the coils or 3 in each, wide-range like. My questions are: would it damage the pickups? And would it do the trick, i.e. make my guitars sound closer to strats?

Re: Help with modding a Full Shred

btw if your after real strat tone you're barking up the wrong tree trying to use anything that uses a bar mag below... you need rod magnets and the correct coil form factor.

Re: Help with modding a Full Shred

It will make your FS thinner and brighter in sound but will lack the bell and chime of a good stra pickup

Re: Help with modding a Full Shred

Do you think a Stag Mag would be a better fit? And could I still remove half of the pole pieces on that one? I don't know which SD pickups, if any, have the pole pieces touching the wires.

Re: Help with modding a Full Shred

stagmag uses humbucker bobbins you could remove those.... it will get you closer but its not going to be the same.. maybe will be close enough for you but still lacks the correct coil shape for strat singles...

If it was me I would mount a real strat single in the slot then get one of the dummy coil back plates from suhr, fralin or illitch...

all are based off the same design and work well. This will be your best shot at getting real strat tone and noisless. Everything else is going to be a stretch.

^^
Maybe it won't sound exactly like a strat pickup, but I'll bet that it would sound great in a Triple Shot ring, where you could tailor it to your needs. I'll bet it would sound great in parallel.

Re: Help with modding a Full Shred

Why not get your favorite noiseless strat pickup and throw on a conversion ring for your humbucker mount like this?

Costs like 7 bucks.

Re: Help with modding a Full Shred

Fails to meet the requirement of hum cancelling though.

Thank you for being the first person in this journey to understand why I don't simply split.

An EMG 89 perfectly fits your requirements.

HTH,

1 - It's active. I use passive bridge pickups.
2 - EMG = $h1t.

Costs like 7 bucks.

Thanks, I'll check that out.

Re: Help with modding a Full Shred

This has happened to me about 26 times. You need another guitar....

What guitar is it you are trying to mod?

I get what your up to... Really though the dummy coil systems I mentioned are worth a look. They are all but transparent in tone and work great to cancel hum.

Jackson Kelly. 24 frets, Floyd. No strat I know has both. And as a matter of fact, I don't like strat shapes. I'm short, which makes the upper horn very uncomfortable. I prefer Gibson-derived shapes, and 22 frets it's usually too little. But I also love the strat neck tone. But I only use humbuckers in the bridge. And with thin, C-shape necks. And compound radius.

Yes, I need other guitars: custom shops. Accepting donations, just $5 a month can change a guitarist's life.

Hey, just to let you know. I went on ebay and found both a reverse tilt for the neck (so the bass side gets a tad brighter) and a standard humbucker for the bridge in diamond plate. I just had to get it. Now let's hope my guitar doesn't get too flashy and poser. Thanks for the tip!

Exactly!

You're Right, but I'll second Demanic in wiring the Stag Mag in parallel.

I would never give more views or clicks to a self admitted internet troll. He says stuff just to piss people off cause he knows the hate gets him views and makes him money. No respect for a person who has chosen that as their method making a living.

What people have said is he takes the screws out of the screw coil but it doesnt sound like a tele... just a thin humbucker.
