Help with Sperzels

Just got a new guitar that came with Sperzels and I cant figure out how to tune the damn thing. Do you use the tuning key or the button the back?

Re: Help with Sperzels

assuming you're talking about locking tuners; there's a nob-screw on the underside of the tuning machine that needs to be screwed in snug to clamp down on the string threaded through the post. that being done, you should be able to turn the tuning peg to preferred note.

Re: Help with Sperzels

unscrew thumbscrew

thread string through hole leaving no slack

tighten thumbscrew

tune

never force the thumbscrew
the strings should not wrap the tuner

Re: Help with Sperzels

Thanks for the info. So once its tuned its tuned? When I brought the guitar home it was pretty out of tune. The sales guy told me to "fine tune" by using the screw in the back. It seemed to work, but I want to make sure thats how its done.

The sales guy is a tool, the screws on the back are not fine tuners they control the locking pin inside the post. You'll probably need to "stretch" your strings just a bit as usual and retune, but it should be pretty solid assuming your guitar is setup well.

Where in NM are you at? I'm in Albuquerque.

Re: Help with Sperzels

wow - just wow

yeah, dont mess with the screw around back until it is time to change strings

that guy is a major idiot

Re: Help with Sperzels

Another example of stupid people tryng to look smart rather than manning up and admitting they don't know, much less trying to find out.

Yeah, the thumbscrew buttons are used to lock the string within the post.

Re: Help with Sperzels

Hahaha .... wow. "Fine tuners" on the backs of the actual tuners. Of course! Why didn't I think of that?

Can't fault you for not knowing, iceman, but it was the salesdouche's job to know and he dropped the ball.

i totally agree. the end user is supposed to be educated by the sales guy, who apparently is a poorly trained monkey

Re: Help with Sperzels

I have had two guitars with Sperzels. My experience differs from your's, apparently.

Re: Help with Sperzels

Am I the only person who thinks the whole guitar store experience would benefit from the employees being paid a decent wage? I realize the retail industry isn't structured that way, but I'd much rather deal with someone who can operate on the level of a consultant with a respectable knowledge of their products than some goofball who is equally qualified to flip burgers or stock frozen foodstuffs.

this is why i did very well in music retail

Re: Help with Sperzels

I want to point out that the locking screws are to be finger tight. Don't over tighten them, just snug them up to hold the string.

Speaking of salespeople making a decent wage, I have a friend who has worked for Guitar Center for over 6 years and he tells me they are lowering the pay plans again. He (my friend) has a large group of costumers and does very well in sales, but has expressed his desire to leave because he can no longer make the same income. This is the same scenario of course, where companies end up running off the experienced in favor of the less knowledgeable (thus cheaper).

Re: Help with Sperzels

The salesman's job is to sell me something.

It's my responsibility to decide if I want to buy the product; my responsibililty to determine if the product will do the job; my responsibility to learn how to use it correctly.

If you do not take those responsibilities--you will will always be dealing with idiot salesmen, and be at the mercy of shysters.
