Hemp material guitar speakers?

Re: Hemp material guitar speakers?

Is there a distinct character that stands out as different?

They sound very clear and articulate without being harsh at all in the high end. No idea if it's due to the speaker cone, but these are lovely speakers.

Re: Hemp material guitar speakers?

I wonder if bamboo would be a good speaker material. I have no idea, but it is strong and weed-like.

I absolutely agree. I think that it has to do with the fact that the hemp cone is stiffer than regular paper while also being lighter. I have one in a 1x12 convertible cab that I just recently removed the back from. I use it with my Picovalve head and it sounds fantastic. Of course it doesn't hurt that it's been played for the last eleven years.
The bamboo question is interesting. You could either pulp it and make paper or strip it really thin and make a laminate cone.

Re: Hemp material guitar speakers?

I have read it somewhere that the advantage of using hemp for speaker cones is that the fibers are longer than the typical fibers from modern wood pulp processes.

Re: Hemp material guitar speakers?

It makes me wonder what a three d printed cone made of carbon fiber would sound like.

Re: Hemp material guitar speakers?

the weber hemp cone speakers that ive heard sound great, so do some of the tone tubbies. the crex is great and eminence used to make an alnico hemp cone guitar speaker but i never heard it. i do have a pair of discontinued hemp cone neo mag eminence bass speakers and i love em, model ch2010 maybe?

Funny, I would expect them to not be harsh, but also expect them to be more fuzzy and aloof than clear and maybe giggle at fart jokes

Re: Hemp material guitar speakers?

I have a Mojotone BV30H (G12H clone) that I am thinking to swap out for something a little tighter and more articulate. The Cannabis Rex looks like an interesting possibility

I would expect them to seem like a good idea at first, but then be extremely inefficient in practice.

Re: Hemp material guitar speakers?

Ok. Seriously considering ordering an Eminence Cannabis Rex, instead of mathcing 1x12" extenision cab- for my Blackstar :)

Only thing I'd want more, is an Alnico magnet. Then I'll go for Weber.

Thank you for answers. :)

(I'll shred up the speaker and smoke it, in case i'm out of cash) :p

I can't get my Cocaine Rex speaker to stop clenching their jaw or taking trips to the bathroom for some reason.

^^ what about the Weber hemp speakers?

They also come with alnico magnets, and various "doping"- different wattages, and so on...

I have a Weber Grey Wolf with a Hemp Cone and Light Doping. It's supposed to be based on a Blue but made more modern and uses a ceramic magnet. To my ears it has the same high end clarity without being harsh. Sounds very open but doesn't loosen up on the low end. I definitely would recommend it for basically any style, it's very versatile.

Re: Hemp material guitar speakers?

I'd not go alnico before trying it out. I did that way back when... Got me a blue into my Blues Jr. and kept that speaker for quite a while. Used it in other cabs as well. Sure clean stuff is really GREAT! So much detail. But the drive/saturated tones sucked big time (according to my prefs). Lacked bass!

In terms of guitar pickups, I am all for alnico. But not speakers, no!

Re: Hemp material guitar speakers?

^^ I always get enough bass, on overdriven tones :/ I'm more a fan of the "80's" high mid bite and brightness.

And yeah- from what I've heard and learned, alnico speakers got a sweetness that's great for clean work :).

(Now I just hope I get rich... so I can buy something). :o

Re: Hemp material guitar speakers?

I'm all for hemp coned speakers if that's the tone you want.

It's not the tone I want though.

Those I've owned were too dull. Not enough "edge" for me.
