Okay, we have here just about the greatest guitar speaker ever made! Altec 417. In the grand scale of things, its second only , unless I am mistaken, to the G12M-20 of EVH fame, although some of the old Pre-Rola Silevrs can also command great respect and great sums of money.
As far as the Altec 417, some say the greatets speaker ever? we are talking dead/Garcia and Santana, and the great original Boogie tone!
I would say that a considerable ways beneath this 417 comes the venerable JBL D-123.
I got real close to tonal nirvana ( the state of mind, not the band) myself, having played a JBl K-120 through a vintage tube amp. Nothing Like I have ever heard. Just rediculously great vintage tone. Unfortunately my JBL had a bad cone scrape, but I did get to the mountain top and get a glimpse, however brief , of the holy holy tone!
