Larry, they aren't priced $15,000 for the tone, but rather for their authenticity. For a collector, nothing but the original will suffice. I agree, though, they do seem a bit pricey. I wonder if that's an accurate reflection of what a set of 59 double creams should really go for?

This is a perfect example of why the normal everyday player cannot afford vintage gear anymore, unless you want to take a second mortgage out on your house. Stupid people asking stupid prices. Collectible or not, that's insane.

I wouldn't pay 15K for the whole 59 Les Paul unless I was filthy rich...I've played a few 50s paulas...they did sound very,very nice and were built like a tank...but they aren't THAT good! .The whole collectors thing is just outta control, IMO.

The DUMBEST thing (IMO of course) I see these days are the "aged" guitars. Beat up...paint chipped off, nicks and dings..etc etc...Buy a 3K instrument then pay someone else to beat it up a bit...

Now, I can understand wanting say a authentic replica of a 61 strat or a 58 Les Paul ( I want one)....because of the design differences compared to instruments of today..and Fender/Gibson can accomodate you in their custom shops. But why the heck would you have the guitar 'aged"??? Who are you fooling? People who actually give a rats @$$ about vintage guitars will spot it's an Aged model, and of course the owner knows it's not a "real" 58/61, etc.

It's like the kids who post a big sign in the front windshield of their that says *NISSAN* or *HONDA* or whatever....anyone who gives a crap already knows what kind of car it is, and the rest of world thinks you look lke an idiot

You know, in almost everything (Cars, guitars, wine, jewelry, guns - you name it) there are two sorts of creatures: collectors and performers. To a performer, the item is only as good as it functions. To the collector, it's all about the value, rarity, etc.

Me - I'm a player. No guitar is on display, except in between the times when it's plugged in. And a pup is only worth what it sounds like to me. And in all honesty, let's face it: In 59 the quality control was questionable and the magnets get old. That pup could sound like a total turd. And for the music I play, even if it's the kabala of all-that-is-and-ever-could-be for a PAF, it would still not be great to me.

Is it cool, yes. Is it 14K cool - not to me.

The funny thing is, that's exactly what the seller says in the description, as if it somehow justifies the starting price of $15K.

Truth is the real PAF's varied widely and some of them really didn't sound particularly good.

But the ones that are right, well, they might almost be worth that much money...

I've seen 'original PAF's' listed before on ebay for those ridiculous prices. I couldn't imagine collectors even trying to pay something like that.

You gotta figure they're just throwing that number up there to see if anybody'll bite.

I can actually see spending a good amount of $$ on them say, if you're restoring an original burst, or your dad or grandpa played a 59' LP, and you've got a historic you want to drop them in....something along those lines.

I also agree that they are probably just throwing that price out to see if someone will pay. Because original bursts are at the $200k + mark, it's natrual that these would go up. I would probably pay $5-6k for a set if I met the conditions I mentioned above. Anything else is just a buy with too much money, IMO. Sadly, they will probably go to a Japanese collector, or someone abroad.

Very true. This auction was clearly not intended for guitar players. I bet that whoever does buy them installs them in a '59 Les Paul (that he took out a second mortgage to buy) and soon after places the guitar in a glass case. It's a shame these instruments don't get played anymore.
