here's the start of *my* anniversary strat:

strat '54

it will likely be finished trans blonde or 2 tone burst ... actually, I'll let the finisher decide once he looks at the wood :)

the neck is perfect! fits like a glove ... not too wide, but deep, fits well in my hand ... kind of between a soft V and a deep C - similar to the neck on my #1 G & L

anyway, enjoy the pics ... should be done in about 3 months :)

I hope that doesn't mean it's gonna end up blue, like so many others!!

But seriously, it sounds really nice, and the wood looks cool too...

Re: here's the start of *my* anniversary strat

Very nice - good looking wood you got there. Bet you cannot wait until its finished - what hardware and pups are you putting in it?

Re: here's the start of *my* anniversary strat

ooooOOOH that's nice man....

trans blonde all the way!!!

Re: here's the start of *my* anniversary strat

Trans blonde would look awesome with that grain!

Re: here's the start of *my* anniversary strat

I don't have any swamp ash Strats, Curly so I'm already jealous! :laugh2:

I like that the glue line does not go through the neck pocket. More than a few obsessive gear-o-holics (like me!) think that's usually a sign of future great tone.

Did you decide on pickups? May I suggest the set I'm currently crazy about?

Antiquity Texas Hot Custom bridge and Antiquity Surfer neck and middle...master volume and tone, .02 Sprague Orange Drop cap and a Fralin Blender Pot.

Re: here's the start of *my* anniversary strat

That looks SWEET !! How about a translucent two tone BLUE Brust! :laugh2:
What ever the color it looks like it's gonna be a fine instrument.:D

Re: here's the start of *my* anniversary strat

thanks to all for supporting my bad habits!

haha ..

I just got a note from Ty at Roxy. He said he should be able to do a blonde finish, and just hide the grain a little on the back to cover the seams

the idea is to keep it more or less close to vintage specs of the early 50s strats, at least cosmetically, so probably no blue - most of those were 2 tone bursts, some blondes, and blacks, and even a few custom colors

likely Callaham hardware, at least the bridge

as far as pickups, I'm putting together a guard with SSL-1s and an SSL-3 bridge, and I'll test that, although there's no telling how it will sound for sure till I put it in the ash body ... I find, at least in teles, that ash has different fundamental tones ... it's quite possible that an ash strat could lend itself more to cleaner rhythm and twangier, bright lead tones with the alnico 5s, as opposed to the more middy blues tone of an alder strat, but we'll see

should be a fun project, though!

thanks again

Re: here's the start of *my* anniversary strat

Awesome Curly dude, Awesome! USA CG are real fine woodworkers... why an "anniversary" ?

Re: here's the start of *my* anniversary strat

The ssl-3 is a great pickup, much over looked, ive got it in the bridge of my strat. That looks like it will be an awesome axe when finished.

Re: here's the start of *my* anniversary strat

That's some nice wood you've got there, Curly.

But more importantly, that Chili recipe sounds awesome! A heart attack waiting to happen maybe, but I'd bet you'd go with a smile on your face. :D

Thames,
USACG were having a 4th year anniversary special on 3 piece swamp ash bodies - $99.

I just called it *my* anniversary strat because it happens to coincide with Fender's 50th year anniversary for the strat, and their version is swamp ash

mine will be better than Fender's, though, by a long shot! :D

Re: here's the start of *my* anniversary strat

U sure u don't wanna go for the "shattered glass" graphic on that? :D

Re: here's the start of *my* anniversary strat

Hey Gary -

That thing looks like a tone monster already :D The grain on the neck looks really pretty too. A 2-tone burst would be my preference for hiding the glue lines, but blondes are sweet too.

I know you want this one to be "Vintage", but here's an idea you might like: get a tapped SSL-3 for the bridge, use a master tone, with dial-a-tap on the third pot. Try the pickup stock first, then add a steel base plate from Callaham if you want to emphasize the lower mids some more in the bridge pickup. I've got a couple of circuits laid out that might work for you without screwing up the appearance.

Re: here's the start of *my* anniversary strat

Chip,
well I just happen to have a tapped Hot. just haven't decided whether to use it on this project or not

as far as finish, 2 tone burst was my second pick ... I'll let Ty at Roxy take a look and see what he thinks is best

Re: here's the start of *my* anniversary strat

Looks Schweeet, G. :32:
Can't wait to see the finished product. Best luck with the process.

Peace,
