Hex-caps for Invader?

Can I order a set of 12 new standard(oversized of course) black-caps to replace the chrome-caps on an Invader tb-8? (Gates-Invader)
Is there anyone specific at SD I should contact for this?

I just ordered a NOS tb-8 bridge while it can still be had, even though they say spacing doesn't matter with these lol.
It just irks me looking at the way the standard invader (or any sh-version) doesn't line up with the strings.

thanks,
dave

Not sure about ordering the screws, but I'm sure that they can be found. It might not look as pretty when they don't line up, but I doubt that it will effect the tone of a pickup like the Invader.

Yeah I figured if nothing else there might be a few who have replaced the large caps with allen-bolts who would sell or trade, but since it's a new pup I'd like some nice new-like caps.

If anyone has a set they'd sell please PM me.

Re: Hex-caps for Invader?

I know people have replaced them, so put in a request in the Trading Post to see what someone might have available.

Re: Hex-caps for Invader?

You can get Dimarzio-style set screws and replace the big oxide caps. Gives it a Full Shred on Steroids look and adds a notable degree of tightness and clarity.

Re: Hex-caps for Invader?

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
I brainstormed at work tonight.
I'll just snag a good deal on a used sh-8, swap them out, and then sell a customized chromed-up used sh-8.

Just for info sake can anyone tell me if the neck-invader has the exact same pole-pieces as the bridge models?
Are they the same depth/length on the neck model?

Yup they are the same, and so you know, a "chromed-up" Invader is a Custom Shop model called the Synyster Gates. When you sell it you should call it that, it's more likely to sell as a Custom Shop pickup.

That's what I just ordered,,,,,,the gates-invader-trembucker-bridge (tb-8sgb) w/chrome-poles. (17.4dcr iirc)

They did also make (and there are still NOS available) the gates-invader-bridge-sh-8,,,,,also with chrome poles.

If I would get a standard used sh-8 and switch the poles (steal the blacks lol) then I wouldn't want to sell it as a "gates-custom". lol
That would be deceptive, which isn't very good as a seller or a buyer.

I guess that's true, even though it is the same thing, it wasn't born a Synyster Gates. It also doesn't have the sticker.

Re: Hex-caps for Invader?

Scored a couple good deals on perfect-condition sh-8b whites w/black-poles. (one is still factory-sealed and the other looks brand-new w/over 13"-lead.
I also ordered another(now I have two on the way!!!) NOS tb-8 from an authorized SD dealer (HDCustomGuitarSupply).

So now after I do the switch-a-roo I'll have my two desired black tb-8b invader trembuckers w/black-caps.($199.98 total (shipped) after discount)
I will also have, and will be posting for sale next week; two like-new white sh-8b (standard bridge invaders) w/chrome poles and faint silver/grey logo,,,,,,,,for a good/cheap "used" price btw.

They will be exactly like this classy-looking shop-floor custom here, but priced as used-standards. Anyone up for a real "fat-strat"?

What are you putting these in Dave? Sure is alot of effort and it sucks that you had to go that route, but I do commend your efforts, way to go old boy!

To start with,I'm taking the x2n/DaXn out of my wmdWarbeast (Eb-tuning). I like the x2n but not the DaXn in this guitar. It's too bassy and just not very bright for a ceramic-neck (in this guitar anyways) The stock mafia is a ceramic neck and was very clear and cutting in comparison (more like an evo), so back in it goes to pair with the tb-8 at the bridge.
This guitar unplugged is a bit boomy in the lows, scooped in the mids, and crisp/zingy in the highs. The lows aren't really muddy, just strong and weighty from the wide-chunky maple3pc neck. It's awesome at the bridge with the x2n, but I just want to see what some extra low-mid thickness and less upper-mids might yield. I think it will be an improvement in the bridge and i know already it will be in the neck, should've never messed with the neck position in first place.

The other tb-8 is going to get an audition in my full-maple w/ebony carvin st300fr (D-standard). This is the one I really wanted all-black since it's a tung-oiled slab of plain hard maple goodness. Chrome bling just doesn't look right on this one, but I might just keep the chrome-caps for the Warbeast and hold onto one of the white invaders for now. Got them for good used-prices so I'm sure not to lose much if any, but even if I ended up being $110-each on a pair of customized tb-8sgb trembuckers, it's still way cheaper than the $360+ for the custom shop to build them.
Invaders have poles and they really should line-up with the strings IMO,,,,,,plus they look cooler not having the caps all crammed together.
Also, everything matters with pickups (and the audio-world in general) and many SD-junkies do claim trembucker-versions always sound slightly different, for better or worse.

Re: Hex-caps for Invader?

Update for the <5 people who might ever care about this: lol

The black-oxide screws and the chome-plated screws are not the same size.
Maybe they are "officially" the same threading and dimension, but the chrome-plated screws are indeed slightly larger.
It looks like the threading itself is more "robust" on the chromes, and possibly the inner-shaft is larger by a sliver,,,,,,,? not sure on that one.

I used some common sense and decided to first try swapping just one screw of each.

First I removed a chrome from the Gates-tb8, then I removed a black from the sh8 and as soon as it started to go into the Gates it was obviously much looser-fitting than the chrome had been. It was only catching threads by about the width of a human hair, literally.
I went ahead and continued screwing it in hoping it would get tighter towards the bottom,,,,,,,,,,,,nope.

I decided to go get a beer and ponder this for a few minutes, then when I pulled the allen-wrench off to sit it down,,,the black-oxide screw pulled-out with the wrench, all the way from near bottom. That's how loose they fit, you could literally just push them in or pull them out without screwing.

So then I put the two screws back in their respective homes and once again they were nice and tight just as they should be,
I was smart enough (barely lol) to not put the chrome into the sh-8 because it would have no-doubt opened the threading too much to reverse.

No loss though, they look awesome just as they are with the chromes, but i still want an all-black model for my carvin.
I hope SD will start offering more of their standard classics in all-black like the nazgul.
An all-black Alt8tb would really be a great choice for my oiled-maple/ebony guitar. I want one!!!!
