I dont know much about wood costs and all, other than what it costs me to do home repairs, so I dont know where this lies on the price scale, but I stumbled across it and thought Id share and also ask if this is a reasonable price or not as I hope to one day build a guitar. And correct me if Im wrong, but this wouldnt really be usable would it, if it only measures 7" wide? it would take at least 2 or so, right?

was on ebay and found this nice looking flame billet.

Re: Hey guitar builders

That's a beautiful piece. Being 2.375" thick you could resaw it and make two book-matched, and planed down would have more than enough for a cap.
The price is fair for a piece of that quality.

If you cant view it and feel her up, I'd be superwary of paying for it. Expensive woods (or even freakin ply!) really ought to be bought in person.

Source: reaaaaally disappointed (but fortunately empty handed still) after first round of ply- and/or hardwood shopping for cabinet/combo enclosure woods... SOOO.MUCH.CRAP.SOLD. Warped, uneven, fake, mislabelled, veneers on bottom of the barrel stuff, toxic chinese fillers that can cause near-asthma-attack experiences just from picking board up to examine it for 30 seconds (wouldnt have believed what happened to me there if I hadnt heard the stories before, many times), etc, etc

Re: Hey guitar builders

Unless you do all your own milling, remember to factor in the costs of having a shop bandsaw, joint, and plane sand the pieces. Those costs can be higher than you'd think. Also factor in shipping, of course. And also realize that at 14" you don't have a ton of room for "slop." Not to be a grump, but it's probably not the piece to learn on, IMHO. I'd get yourself a reasonably priced board of plain maple to **** up first, then get more complicated and fancy as you gain experience, and have a good deal of screw ups behind you on the cheap and plain looking stuff.

Re: Hey guitar builders

LMI has good deals on some great maple, and you can even get them to joint it relatively inexpensively. I had a slab of mahogany from them milled down to 5/8" and jointed (to be the top of a vintage spec LP Custom) for $25 in their shop.

Re: Hey guitar builders

Do what i did and join your local wood working guild. I have a heap of tools of my own but i still go there to use the jointer, thicknesses and larger band saw etc. its been awesome and its a great way to work out exactly what tools to invest in.
