OK. So I've been wanting to make some cover versions for awhile, but the subject matter was always a concern for me. I want to do this as a way of learning songwriting, trying to give myself some understanding of how stuff gets put together. Now, if I bash out a Van Halen, Anthrax, or Pantera cover, it's obviously gonna suck compared to the original. So I need a band that I like, with songs that are not too complicated, but isn't metal.
I was a teen in the 80's, & I have a large new wave streak running through me. So I thought...Depeche Mode. The earlier stuff is real basic, & has nothing to do with metal. Their late 80's/early 90's stuff is more complex, even orchestrated, so most of it won't do, but it's my favorite period from them (Black Celebration, Music For The Masses, Violator).
The first song I latched onto was Nothing, from Music for the Masses. Pretty simple riff, & could be made pretty damn heavy. So, I tried it out. This is just a bare-bones quickie sample, just getting the idea down (though I'm happy with the intro as is).
1st thing I found: there is a lot of percussion going on in these songs. I can't duplicate the stuff accurately w/my RiffTracker, so any little beats & blips would have to be done w/the guitar. There's also a little melody that floats in & out, & then there's the vocal melody, as well. None of that is on here, this is just base rhythym guitar only. I don't know if I'm capable of the more intricate stuff, or if it even needs it. I don't know if I can pull off a Satriani-esque vocal melody line, but I might attempt it.

I think an entire collection of these songs done metal would be really cool, though I may be the only one who thinks so.
