Hey guys…SG repair vs Cost question

Hey guys…SG repair vs Cost question

Tripped across this SG in a pawn shop. An 03 or so…for $300. Dot inlays.

But it had this issue:

Appears the thing got a serious smash and it cracked the body. Otherwise it appears to be a righteous SG.

What say you? I was thinking Glue / Clamp / Sand / Paint and win….

I've seen worse. I'd get it for that price. Are the PU's stock?

You mean "paint the whole thing" or "try to match the repair to the surrounding area"?

Good question!

First - who cares? Not like I'd keep them anyway….

Second - Bridge is a Zebra Duncan. So, SG for like $225, and Bonus SD pup!

What color?

I'd be all over that. Hell, you could piece out the hardware and pickups for a couple hundred.

While that Blue SG is quite spiffy - what's wrong with a leaving the original finish with the repaired battlescar? Its a lot less effort.

That is what I am thinking. If it is structurally sound just rock the stuffing out of it.

Whoa..nasty crack running right with the grain on the lower bout.
IMO those guitars never sound quite right again. If you play under gobs of gain, or with mediocre amps, though, who cares?

Certainly good enough (dare I say excellent) for playing a few Kiss covers and various '80s hare metallz songs.

:D

I can't help wondering if that crack is on the control cavity only, or if it really does run right through the solid part of the body.

if it's the former, it's really not that big a deal. Wick in some thin super glue, level it, re-colour if you feel like it, and buff to a high gloss to match the rest. boom, good to go.

If it's a crack that runs through the entire lower half of the body, then you probably should either stay away from it, or be prepared to invest in a good repair guy.

Ditto - the Doctor needs to do a resurrection.

I could definitely see getting that. I don't do any finish work so I'd be looking at cost+repair cost vs. what a clean example would cost. I love the Heritage Cherry finish, but a custom color would be cool, too. And then you could simply reinforce it, do minimal touch-up, and then just play the heck out of it. It's all about the budget. :) Very tempting....

Good luck!

Bill
