I was arguing with a buddy, he says that epiphone hand finish their guitars, like person walks up to the guitar and spray paints it. that would be impossible with the price and how many they turn around. anybody have any idea how they finish them? or really any guitar that is under the $500 price tag

Some shops do them by hand and other have automated robots.

I watched a few chinese guitar factory vids and it was all done by hand. I think i saw a cort one and they had a fully automated setup.

Outsourcing has changed everything.

I'm a working graphic artist in the United States.

For what my company pays me, they also have 35 artists in Honduras to do production work. Is it great work? Nah...but as long as there is a hive brain (me) there to check on things, it works for them.

It's sad really.

As the others have said, it's all about balancing the cost of labor vs. machines. NC machines to paint are not cheap. The automated paint booths in auto plants are a lot of money, but the market demands the precision for the product. A cheapie guitar is going to sell no matter what, so $1 a day sprayers is acceptable. Once the price of a human exceeds the price of a machine, the machine will take the task.

As others have alluded to, it depends entirely on company location, volume, legal situation, and to a lesser extent philosophy.

The cheaper labor is, the more likely it is to be hand finished.
The higher the volume being produced, the more likely
The less restrictive workplace health regulations are the more likely it is to be hand finished
Company Philosophy can go either way.

If you´re shipping something like 2-300 guitars /day, have "high" labor costs like Korea, and the government cares at least a lilttle but how long taxpayers live, the gchances of it being done by machine go up fast.

On the flipside, if your workers only earn 5$ /day or less, you´re producing 100 /month, and the government couldn´t care less about how many thousands get injured, crippled, maimed or killed at work, you can safely bet your ass it´s going to be hand finished. ;)

Remember , "hand finished" is =/= finished well or even properly. I can dip a guitar in sealer 10x by hand and get a half inch thick finish, too, it just takes much less time than doing it right, which involves lots of sanding, which is by far the most time consuming part of any non-graphic finish. Dipping , quick sanding, colorcoating, quick sanding, clearcoating, buffing is much faster which means more profit, which means it´s probably going to be done that way the farther down the ladder you go.

Hell, if guitars were made of metal or another electrically conductive material the lower end ones would all simply be powdercoated and done with. ;)

Yeah but you don't want to know where those hands have been

Re: hey I have a question of how cheap guitar makers do it

It's called cost control through slavery. Happens all over the world.

Re: hey I have a question of how cheap guitar makers do it

Cheap labour can also be to do with cost of living too, as well as just exploitative businesspeople. In Australia we have fairly high cost for everything - wages as well as food/cars/property etc. Comparing even to a similar type of economy (the UK), myself as a tradesman isn't too far away from consultant wages just on exchange rate. Property prices in Aus for something very average sized in a major city is like a moderate country estate in the UK for example.

So you can make quite cheap guitars even if your factory is good to workers in general - as long as you choose the right country in which to do so......add in someone who is less concerned to the equation and your cost of production can really seem cruelly low.

Exchange rate is everything. $268 USD a month ain't sheet in America, but is around 1700 Yuan, so that's roughly $425 a week. Better than McDonald's.

I make robot noises while I am spraying.. It's kind of the best of both worlds that way, automation with a human touch..
