HI END AMP TALK -- all experiences welcome!

TwilightOdyssey

Darkness on the edge of Tone
Early this year I upgraded my home recording setup and decided that next year I would be getting another amplifier to complement my Splawn Quick Rod.

While the list kind of increases and shrinks as the weeks go by, it's halfway though the year and time to start assembling the Short List.

My list thus far is as follows:

Komet 19
Komet 60
Bruno Pony 50
Sommatone Outlaw

If anyone owns one of these amps or has any firsthand experience, I would love to hear about it.

Also, if you know of anything that you think is comparable, I would love to know about it.

I have no interest in amps by the following makers:

Cornford
Matchless
Victoria
Carr
Mojave

They just don't do anything for me.

I'm also not interested in anything that is a Dumble clone.

Single channel is fine, wattage isn't too too important. Plexi clones are fine, so long as have some versatility. Don't need reverb.

Re: HI END AMP TALK -- all experiences welcome!

I wish I could help ... I've only played a Komet 60 briefly. All I can tell you is that it's VERY LOUD, which you already know.

to be honest, it's a good question for The Gear Page

Re: HI END AMP TALK -- all experiences welcome!

So are you looking for something that does cleans really well but then has some overdrive when cranked? A little more info?

Re: HI END AMP TALK -- all experiences welcome!

Never played those amps....but if you are thinking about/looking at Wreck clones consider a Two Rock Ruby. I played one when I traded off my pair of Zs. I couldn't come together with the guy on prices so I took home a Fuchs Train 45 instead. It was a cool amp too, but the Two Rock was warmer sounding......could be attributed to JJs vs old Marconis!

talk to bludave he has a komet he raves about.

Re: HI END AMP TALK -- all experiences welcome!

What exactly are you looking for that your current Splawn doesn't provide?

Re: HI END AMP TALK -- all experiences welcome!

The only two on the short list I have any experience with are the Komet 19, at the amp show... and the Sommatone which is a really killer hi-gain monster. Those are some VERY different amplifiers...

No reason to rule out Fuchs either. Maybe a Fryette like the Deliverance?

Reeves?

Lots of cool stuff out there...

What are you looking for?

Re: HI END AMP TALK -- all experiences welcome!

add to list?

Re: HI END AMP TALK -- all experiences welcome!

Thanks for the replies! I've given some thought to the cries of 'more info!' I thought I was being clear! :)

The Splawn covers hot-rodded plexi to modded JCM800 territory. I guess what I'm looking for is something that is a bit darker, thicker sounding, but not sounding modern or 'recto'. NO DUMBLE CLONES!!!

I'm looking for an amp that will play clean with some "hair" on it, can be cleaned up with a 5751 if need be, and will not fall apart when I hit it with a treble booster or fuzz.

Re: HI END AMP TALK -- all experiences welcome!

ive played a pony 50 and it knocked my socks off. like a 'perfect' plexi and by perfect i dont mean polished or refined. it just felt like an extension of the guitar more than any real plexi ive played. ive hung out with tony and im not sure if this was a special model or not and im sure he wouldnt remember since it was a while ago but it was awesome. too loud for me, but still awesome

If you asked this same question on TGP, you would get a deluge of real, no-****, firsthand experience.

I can assure you that is just the sound of the Pony 50! I've played it many times @ Ultrasound, as well as the Underground and Cowtipper models. Amplifiers non pareil for certain!

Re: HI END AMP TALK -- all experiences welcome!

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll see what they have to say. (Never been to TGP before)

It's definitely different from SDUGF in that most of the membership there is not as into modifying, but rather buying exactly what they want, so you'll see a lot more high end equipment, small manufacturers, custom gear.

They joke on themselves as being "Corksniffer Central" and you'll see threads about somebody's new 10-top PRS get the response that you'd see for a MIM Strat over here. ("Cool man, glad you like it" as opposed to "Wow, look at that!")

All that said, you go different places for different information: I always come here (my home) for modding stuff, pickup stuff, and "sub $1000 questions." I am a modder at heart and a cheapo by upbringing

If you want to make your guitar sound great with a little TLC and some soldering, SDUGF is the place.

If you need an opinion on a high end piece of gear, you're more likely to find someone with experience to chime in on TGP.

Happy tone hunting,
Hunter

ive played enough cowtippers and ug30, even a few tweedy pies, to know what they are about but that was the only pony ive tried and it was awesome.

The Pony is special, no doubt about it! It literally ate the Two Rock and Roccaforte sitting next to it.

Re: HI END AMP TALK -- all experiences welcome!

tony is the man, even if he can be a little... umm... difficult :D

I believe you are looking for some thing like these three !!!

MATAMP GT1 / 1224MKII, or Electric USA MVU !!!

DEFF darker sounding, a lot thicker than the thickest hot rodded AC30, can do cleans just liie a Bassman, and it can get dirty if need be, but NOT in a compressed way - think Orange OR80 and the like !

Re: HI END AMP TALK -- all experiences welcome!

Thanks for the Matamp recommendations, I played the GT1 at London Guitar Show a couple of years ago.
