Hi Gain Stompbox?? Suggestions??

Re: Hi Gain Stompbox?? Suggestions??

The Fullbore has a couple cool sounds in it, it's not really fair to pile on. It's just not what I was looking for.

Re: Hi Gain Stompbox?? Suggestions??

I'm not sure the Distortron qualifies as a hi gain dirt pedal?

It's an amazing pedal and it does have a bunch of gain, but it's a Plexi-in-a-box so unless you slam the input with an OD/boost or use super hot pickups, it won't give much of a Hard Rock/Metal tone just on it's own, I think.
I remember it got very loose sounding with higher gain settings.

Other pedals could keep things tidier and tighter.
I don't own a Distortron, but that's what I remember at least.

I love me a Rat.

Also, on a budget, the Monty Allums Recto Mod for the Boss DS-1 is pretty dang good. It has about as much gain as a normal DS-1, but its EQ is voiced MUCH better. Ask Immortal 6; he owns the first one I built. I missed having it so much, I built another.

If you want a little less squish and a little more whap! a Recto Mod with LEDs in the clipping section would probably be cool, too.

DS-1 Monte Allums mod

Yep.

Here's a video of my (Rich S's) Monte Allums DS-1. The pedal comes in around 2:00. I don't adjust the knobs at all in the video, but I can tell you how I had it set: Level to taste, Tone to taste, and Gain on 0 - all the way down.

This pedal does a WONDERFULLY smooth and full-of-character gain sound.

I know the video says it's a Hot Rod DeVille demo, but it's just as much a demo of how the Monte Allums DS-1 sounds, since I use it as much as I use the clean amp in this video.

You can hear the pedal at higher gain settings both here and by Googling / YouTubing.

As soon as I heard that first clip, I knew I had to have one.

EHX Metal Muff + Top Boost?

I'd get that one instead of the other Metal Muffs just because of the 3 band EQ. Can't live without that.

This is the one I have and it friggin' rocks (well, in fact, it metals). The top boost is cool as ****.

Maynardo, do you know of any Blackstar dealers here in Chile?

Yo para variar no tengo idea. :D

Re: Hi Gain Stompbox?? Suggestions??

i've tried a modern Rat and it did not impress(very bland actually), also tried the Distx but it paled in comparison to the Damage Control Solid Metal pedal...i have been experimenting with my BYOC tri-boost into the clean channel and the crunch channel(with the gain set low) of my 3120 and i am really liking the tones i am getting, has lots of crunch and definition with little compression, not quite the Iommi sound i was after but still very pleasing...

Re: Hi Gain Stompbox?? Suggestions??

MXR Fullbore lasted less then a year, same for Metal muff with top boost. They both don't work now. Tryed a Boss Power stack and was not impressed. A good high gain pedal is hard to find.

To James Rock, who asked me how I liked the Leviathan fuzz, and what kind of fuzz sounds it covers:

I haven't played very many fuzz pedals, so I'm limited with what I can compare it to. But to me it has a BIG fuzz effect. Very high gain. And it has a switch (Roar, and Rumble) that I understand takes it from a germanium type to silicon type sound. I prefer the Rumble but they're both really cool. Wampler uses a Smashing Pumpkins cover to demo this pedal, and that's appropriate because it sounds like their sound. That's about the best I can do now, hope it's helpful. Is it worth $200? It is to me.

Re: Hi Gain Stompbox?? Suggestions??

+1 for Mesa V-Twin, never played it, but Zerb here had an amazing tone with it, and from what I understand it is a buku bucks collectable now.

Re: Hi Gain Stompbox?? Suggestions??

If you get a Fullbore you will hate life. I got rid of mine and just picked up a Big Muff Germanium 4 which has some very cool sounds so far.

DOD Death Metal /thread.

Hahaha actually that was my first distortion pedal. It was 30 bucks at Mars Music, Remember that play. I didn't use it a whole lot. I don't remember it sounding THAT bad but that was before I was ever in a band. I wonder what ever happened to it.

I was only halfway joking. If it did what it does without being so damn noisy and squeal prone it would be a really good distortion. I know there's some mods...
