Hi Gain Stompbox?? Suggestions??

Re: Hi Gain Stompbox?? Suggestions??

Here is a little demo I dido for the Riot Reloaded. Enjoy!

Re: Hi Gain Stompbox?? Suggestions??

I use a BOSS Mega Distortion for my high gain stuff. The thing is over the top and very full sounding. Lots of guttural bass without sounding muddy. They also don't break the budget you can find them for about $40 used on line.

Re: Hi Gain Stompbox?? Suggestions??

I have a mesa flux five coming next week. It's the lower harm of mesa's eq pedals, by the eq should enable some awesome metal tones.

Re: Hi Gain Stompbox?? Suggestions??

My quest for a high gain stomp box finally ended with the Empress Heavy. Lots tonal control/options, well built, and worth every penny. Throw a TS808 type pedal in front of it for even more variety.

Re: Hi Gain Stompbox?? Suggestions??

Surprised no one has mentioned the Bogner Red or Blue pedals...

The Mesa Flux Drive will get you close to Mark Series tones, while the Throttle Box lies more in the realm of insanely distorted Dual Rectifier tones. Both boxes come in upgraded versions with built-in 5-band EQs (i.e. the Flux FIVE). I really liked the Flux Drive I tried, but didn't buy it--it's super-redundant with the Mesa amps I already have.

And I have to admit, I don't use extreme gains settings on any of my amps; and that I much prefer the tube driven tones of the amps over a solid-state pedal.

electro harmonix metal muff with top boost... is great for rythm and leads... click the boost button and u get tighter bass and more top end and top mids

Re: Hi Gain Stompbox?? Suggestions??

I like Throttlebox from MesaBoogie. Only the issue of it is tone is not various.... I haven't tried new version though.

Yes, the original Throttle box will definitely go where you want it to. I own it, I love it...... well,.. call it heavy infatuation!

But the new version will definitely go where no guitar has gone before, UNLESS you have a MESA Amp!

Re: Hi Gain Stompbox?? Suggestions??

Funny seeing that I suggested a Metal Muff Top Boost in this topic in 2011.
Followed my own advice, bought one.

Hated it after a while. No clarity, just fizz pretending to be definition.

And the top boost is, IMO, useless beyond belief. Insane amounts of pointless treble.
I guess it's good for Morbid Angel or Nile in a budget.
Sold it and I don't miss it at all.

The Bogner Red has so much tweakability, that you can always find a great high gain tone that sounds as good as the red channel on an Ecstasy, when plugged into a tube amp set clean or edgy. It'll instantly get you Jerry Cantrell's tone.

The Bogner Blue will put you into Bad Co, Gary Moore, and AC/DC territory much better than a simple OD pedal.

They're not cheap, but neither is the sound.

Re: Hi Gain Stompbox?? Suggestions??

malekko sloika is the best gain pedal I have come across BUT it is not for that uber tight metal chug stye distortion. It is more of a thick low mid heavy distortion. Check the PGS demo out though it is pretty accurate. I had the Triple Wreck but was not a fan of it and have had many distortions over the years. Malekko wins hands down.

Re: Hi Gain Stompbox?? Suggestions??

I remember trying the Vox Satchurator a while ago and really liking it for what it was. Don't own it though so my experience is limited. Usually an OCD gives me all the gain I need.

Re: Hi Gain Stompbox?? Suggestions??

Really old thread, but most people have a definition of high gain that depends on their tastes in music. What some people may think of being high gain is laughable to others.
