Hi guys, new to the forums. Need a quick answer.

Re: Hi guys, new to the forums. Need a quick answer.

Crap! I forgot that came in a set too. Great suggestion!

To Lewguitar, I was only bringing up the sh5 because it is a standard sized humbucker that I used in an Epi LP, so I figured it was a good example compared to the op's situation.

Tonello, I think SH = Standard Humbucker. Not 100% on that, but it was what I've heard.

I'm actually in agreement with Lewguitar. If you know you like the JB & Jazz, start there. It will sound different in a LP than in a Jackson, but it is a good starting point and it's familiar

I figured the H stood for humbucker, but I wasn't gonna say that and be wrong. I don't use the TB's anyways, so even if I don't know what SH stood for, I know it's what I want. The only two guitars for TB spacing that I have are my Tribal Explorer and V.

Tribal Explorer and V? I DEMAND PICS!!! PM me if you have to, but those sound like some super sweet guitars!!!

Sorry, :hijacked:

Re: Hi guys, new to the forums. Need a quick answer.

I wouldn't mind seeing them either so feel free to post them on here. I want kind of a darker tone. Right now the stock pickups are super brite. Like even with pressence and treble down these things still sound pop/punkish lol.

Re: Hi guys, new to the forums. Need a quick answer.

I don't have a picture of the V right now (have yet to buy a new camera after my daughter broke it), but here's one of my Explorer that I had on my computer.

The pickups are a Distortion Mayhem set, ebony board, and a Kahler bar. Probably the best explorer I've played in a while. I prefer ebony boards when available, and I try my best to stay away from rosewood (I hate the look of it). The ebony was what attracted me to the guitar in the first place.

Listen to the Distortion pups. They have a certain warmth to them, and it really warms up with a nice overdriven tube amp. I'm using a Swollen Pickle MKII for most of my distortion, but I find that those pups with the MXR Classic overdrive right into the preamp is a great sound. Really pushes it when I have to solo, and the overdrive into the fuzz is down right amazing, great low end, with a mid range that pops out.

That looks amazing!

I noticed that, the Distortion, Invader, and the Dimebucker have super unique tones compared to the rest in the video posted earlier. But the JB seems to have the balls want. My guitar originally had that tone when I was playing it through the original owners lil epiphone practice amp. I got home and plugged it into my Bugera and it just seemed to sing like Micheal Jackson getting kicked in the balls. :banghead:

Ever since then I wanted to replace my pickups but my other hobby got in the way. Damn cars. Now I have a daughter so its time to choose the less expensive hobby :approve:

HOLY BALLS I JUST REALIZED THAT'S KEITH MERROW!! I was listening to this guy like a year or 2 ago. I freaking loved his song titan. I really want his Darth Vader guitar and wanna know what that red guitar is.

Re: Hi guys, new to the forums. Need a quick answer.

Before making your purchase, do this: measure from the middle of your high-E to the middle of your low-E directly over the bridge pickup. If it's less than 2" (or 50mm) get the Hot Rodded humbucker set. If it's more than 2" (or around 52.5mm) get a TB-4 for the bridge and an SH-2n for the neck. Unfortunately, the TB version doesn't come in a set. You'll have to buy the two pickups separately.

The old rule of thumb was "Fender = Trembucker, Gibson = humbucker." But in the last two decades, the string spacing at the bridge has migrated for both companies.

Welcome to the SDUGF and good luck with your tone quest.

It is just under 2 inches. Sorry for the late reply. Just got home from work.

Re: Hi guys, new to the forums. Need a quick answer.

If you use the SH-4 your high and low E strings are going to look slightly off above the pole pieces. They will pass over the OUTSIDES of the centers on the pole pieces. On the TB-4 the strings will line up much better but will be slightly over the INSIDE of the centers. The problem with putting the TB in is that the pickup is much bigger and you sometimes have to file out your pickup rings and even sometimes have trouble with the centering of the actual ring and that will give you pole piece alignment problems. I have had the same problem you are having. The sound is pretty much the same, though I have found that TBs sound a hint darker and some people agree with that. Its all a matter of if you can deal with the strings not being perfectly aligned over the center of the pole pieces. SHs will work just fine and give you alot less problems with installation.

Yeah cars can get expensive. What were you running? I had an old 68 mustang that I sold a few years back for about $60,000. It bought us part of a new house when my daughter was born.

****...I wish my car was worth that much. 91 Toyota MR2 Hardtop. It's N/A 5spd but I have a turbo motor I am/was working on building. =)

That guitar makes me drool! I remember when these came out a few years ago. I pined for one but couldn't make it happen. Super nice, bro!

TJ, glad to hear you found some solid pickups. Did you get the Hot-Rodded set?

I got the Explorer for our anniversary, and the V was my birthday gift from my wife and daughter.

Those weren't bad. I lost to my fair share of them at the track back when I was drag racing. I haven't worked on a car since I sold mine, though. Right now I have an Ford Explorer (heh) that I can use to haul around my gear.

Re: Hi guys, new to the forums. Need a quick answer.

Yea I ended up getting the hot rodded set =D

And yea due to them being so light weight upgrading the turbo and some fuel mods putting down around 400-500 hp you have a good high 10 mid 11 car. And it doesn't cost much to get you there. I just chose to stick to guitar until I finish college.

Right. I bought my Mustang like a year or two after I finished college. I sold it about 10 years later for a house. It was black and gold, and I loved it, because it had the same look as my Les Paul that I got from my grandfather.

Re: Hi guys, new to the forums. Need a quick answer.

Once I find a pickup that I like, especially a NECK pickup that I like, I tend to use it in all of my guitars.

Well, except all too often they tend to sound different from one guitar to the next due to guitar design & wood, even due to individual differences in the 'same' type of wood.
