Here's the issue. I just put a TonePros bridge and tailpiece on my Les Paul. I restrung the guitar and all strings sound find except for the High E. Its a bit hard to describe, but it sounds almost brittle. Definitely out of wack compared to the other other 5 strings. I did intonate the guitar and the strings are brand new GHS boomer 10's. The only other thing I did was put a but of graphite in the nut.

Any ideas whats going on?

Thanks

Matt

Re: High E String Problem

The string may be vibrating in the nut slot. IF it is it will need to be filled with epoxy and bone dust mixed together. Than a new slot will need to be cut. Not a simple job if you have never done this before.

Sounds like a trip to the guitar tech! Thanks for the info, Bludave!

Re: High E String Problem

That would only affect the tone when the string is picked open. Once it's fretted a sloppy nut won't affect the tone of the string. The high E could be rattling against the surface of the bridge saddle tho...very commen. I use a brass bridge saddle on some of my Strats, like Eric Johnson also does, to help smooth out the tone of the high E string.

Maybe your stop tailpiece is to low or to high. If it's to high the strings are not being pressed down tightly enough against the bridge saddles.

If it's to low, the strings will contact the back edge of the bridge...not good either!

Adjust your tailpiece so there is a sliver of light between the back edge of the bridge base (not the saddles!) and the underside of the strings.

I like the tailpiece set as low as it can go without the strings contacting the back edge of the base of the tuneomatic bridge.
