High E string too close to the edge of the fretboard?

I was wondering if this was a common issue. I thought maybe I could get used to it. But after over a week I am still pulling the string off the neck. It's not right on the edge. But it's close enough that if you slide up the neck or do a pull off. And aren't careful it goes off the edge.

Yeah I don't like that. You can make a new nut or have one made and push the saddles over if you have them.

Re: High E string too close to the edge of the fretboard?

Yeah I read about that earlier. I will look into it I guess I would have to order new saddles. It's on my new sg standard.

Re: High E string too close to the edge of the fretboard?

I feel your pain.
That used to bug the heck out of me when I had some narrower boards.
In recent years I've only kept/bought guitars with wider boards so there's plenty of room on the outsides.

Re: High E string too close to the edge of the fretboard?

You haven't had the fret end rounded over have you? Some techs get carried away and put too much fall off on them, and either E will slide off.

Re: High E string too close to the edge of the fretboard?

It's just like it came from the factory. There is plenty of space on the low E. But the high E actually almost rests on where the fret rounds over from the factory. Right now I have 10's on it I'm afraid if I move up to my usual 11's. That it will rest on the rounded edge.
If I push the string straight down it's fine. But if I use and vibrato or slide more than 1 or 2 frets then it slides off.

Sorry about the pic size but it shows the issue pretty accurately. If anything the angel makes it look further away from edge than it is.

Either you can do it yourself or take it to a tech. A new nut and saddles with the slots cut farther over. Either with the E strings an equal distance from the edge, or I actually like it with more room for the high e than the low E.

Re: High E string too close to the edge of the fretboard?

If that photo is truly representative, it just don't look right. Nut (or bridge, or both) looks to be shifted too far over to high e. Personally, I'd send it back. I'm not a tech or luth so I could be just plain wrong. But, there are a couple good photos in this ebay listing link that look like the string spacing/position is correct. I don't think the issue would exist with the SG standard guitar in this link ... https://www.ebay.com/itm/2017-Gibson-SG-Standard/142725608097?hash=item213b1bf2a1:g:ZHsAAOSwJ3RaraFG

Re: High E string too close to the edge of the fretboard?

Bridge is off, for sure. Have the saddles renotched, or order new saddles and have it set up by a competent luthier.

Re: High E string too close to the edge of the fretboard?

Sadly, a new nut is almost a requirement on a new Gibson these days.

Check the distance from the edge of each E string to the fretboard edge at both the nut and the bridge. You may have to correct both, but any competent tech can handle it.

Re: High E string too close to the edge of the fretboard?

Yeah - this is a Gibson SG.

SHOULD NOT BE AN ISSUE.

Fat and skinny E should be pretty much equal distance to the edge, and if any is closer - let it be the low E.

I bout a low end B guitar that was pretty close - but it was obvious that Floyd lock nut was off. But hey - $200 and a relatively easy fix.

Re: High E string too close to the edge of the fretboard?

I checked the spacing at the nut and it is about spot on. We checked the saddles and the notches are centered and inline with the holes in the tailpiece. We measured the distance from the posts to the edge of the body and they are equal distance.
The string line up evenly over the bridge pickup pole pieces. But when it gets to the neck pick up is when the distances start changing.

Re: High E string too close to the edge of the fretboard?

Yeah - sounds like the actual neck is off. Even worse defect.

Should have bought an Epi G400 or an LTD Viper....Half the money, twice the quality.

Re: High E string too close to the edge of the fretboard?

Yeah I was afraid it was something to do with the neck. My wife bummed as she thought she picked a good one. But I told her we would get it sorted out.

Re: High E string too close to the edge of the fretboard?

I had one like that, the fret ends were rolled too much. A new nut with tighter spacing fixed it and never had another problem.

Re: High E string too close to the edge of the fretboard?

Sounds and looks like the neck is indeed set-in untrue.
When I hear the term "twisted" I picture a totally different problem.

And yes those fret-ends, at least some of them anyways, are beveled too much inward.
They don't look very consistent with each other either.

I have the same problem with a Tokia I have. The high E is awful close to the edge of the board and I often pull it off the board when bending or vibrato
