High end/boutique pedals?

Last night, for the first time ever, my bassist said he didn't like my tone. Specifically, my pedal board. im running..

boss DS-2 -> EHX Big Muff Pi -> EHX Small Stone -> EHX Nano Clone -> Korg Pitchblack.

--------------------

You guys got any pedals that i can substitute for my ds 2? I'm looking to get a deluxe electric mistress and a small clone, so i have modulation covered. im also saving up to buy the deluxe memory man with tap tempo so that will have my delay covered pretty much until I die.

know any good distortion/overdrive pedals?

Know any good reverb pedals?

any other general tips?

Re: High end/boutique pedals?

You listened to your bass player? Ha ha ha ha..... never mind. Do you like your tone? Does it inspire you to play? More importantly does your sound work within the context of your band? I don't see anything wrong with your board at all and as long as you are happy with it l wouldn't change it.

the skull crusher distortion pedal is pretty cool..it is a chrome skull...but it is stupid expensive..like..250 bucks bucks or something

Re: High end/boutique pedals?

As said above, I see nothing wrong with your board. EHX are really good stuff. Having said that there are just soooooooooo many different blends of dirt. What range of dirt and tonal characteristics are you looking for?

Re: High end/boutique pedals?

I would agree that if YOU'RE happy with your tone you don't need to change it. But if you're set on getting new pedals, I can recommend a couple. I only had Boss OD & dist. pedals on my board and wanted something more "distinctive", so I recently purchased both a Catalinbread WIIO and a Subdecay Super Nova Drive. Both are great pedals, but I find myself using the Subdecay a lot more. Very usable pedal with a great range of tones from mild breakup to pretty heavy OD/dist. But the WIIO is more "amp like" in it's responsiveness to pick attack and volume knob setting.

As far as reverbs go, I think the best one currently might be the Neunaber Technologies Wet Reverb. This is admittedly based on YouTube reviews, but I saw one on Joe Satriani's board in a video of his rig, and Joe can have anything he wants.

Re: High end/boutique pedals?

Why all of a sudden did he not like your tone? Did you change something from what all you nornally use?

Try $400. Great pedals, the Kasha ODP is a cheaper version at $200, but they don't have a level knob which may or may not work for you. In the price range there are lots more to look at.

Nothing wrong with a DS-2, if it is the sound you are looking for.

If you are looking for "Marshall-y" sounds, the Lovepedal Superlead at GC looks like a good deal, but again, there are lots of choices...

Re: High end/boutique pedals?

If you like your tone then it is good and even if you do want to change it you don't have to spend a lot of money to get a good dirt box...

Go try an MXR Distortion III out and see what you think...plenty of gain, great tone and low buck too!

I mean, I can suggest you pedals that cost as much as a grand or more but that doesn't make them good...

Re: High end/boutique pedals?

I am really loving the Zia Drive and its not that much $200 new I just got an SRB808 that seems very promising.

Twin tube classics work very well with fender amps I just saw one on TGP for 85 dollars shipped with the box and paperwork thats a steal imo.

Re: High end/boutique pedals?

What amp/guitars are you using?

tele with texas specials and ther jaguar with the stock humbuckers.

these sound phenomenal through the deluxe though, so im guessing its the pedals. what im looking for is ideas on how tot improve the tone from my pedalboard

Yeah - tell the bass player to Shut TF up, stand in back and thump along with the idiot on drums.

Seriously...what amp, etc...And talk right. Do you think you HAVE booteek petals, or do you want some? I agree with dial it in. Honestly, you seem like a bit of an EH fanboi. But honestly, I think you should be able to get a decent sound out of that. Steve Vai used to use a TS-9 and a Ds-1 until they smashed them into one box and slopped some paint on it....

What kind of verb do you need and for what? Splash of spring all the time, multiple types, some hall for a solo, what?

Re: High end/boutique pedals?

It doesn't have to be expensive to sound good. More often than not it's a matter of dialing the amp in to the point where it is receptive to pedals and they compliment each other.

The Crunch Box is hard to beat for very reasonably priced dirt.

Crunch box is an awesome sounds distortion pedal !

Re: High end/boutique pedals?

reverb like this

distortion like that, more overdrive really. something smooth and gooey. i find my boss to be too "normal" and typical sounding. I like the Way Huge Green Rhino. maybe that's up my alley.

and im not an EHX fanboy just for the sake of it! :lmao:. i liked that big huge Siamese Dream then found out its a big muff. I like andy summer's chorus sounds and found out its an Electric Mistress. I heard the phase 90 and small stone and decided the stone was warmer. i liked U2s sounds and discovered its the same andy summers uses, a deluxe memory man. its not like i just pull these pedals out of my ass!
