I bought an Ibanez Valbee tube amp (1 X 6L6GC and 1 x 12ax7) and much to my surprise, I like it a lot. The clean channel, that is. As soon as you engage the boost switch, you get the most disgusting gain imaginable. I don't know what they were thinking.
BUT, the clean channel is totally amazing. And with the record out, I get tones that even the Traynor I used to use have a hard time competing. And with the new JJ 6l6GC and high gain ECC83 I just installed, it's even better! Can't wait to receive my 59 set now.
So since I like this little bugger so much (a toyish small blue cube, almost perfectly square, with a 6.5 inch speaker that has so much bottom end it's amazing), I want to buy a good pedal for the gain. This will make the perfect home or small studio tube amp. What I've been searching for so long.
I want a keeper, something I'll be able to use with other amps. For now, I'm down to three options:
1) Tonebone Hot British
2) Carl Martin Plexitone
3) Seymour Duncan SFX-03
Are these too expensive for what they actually provide? Can you get as good a tone with the OCD, Crunch Box or any other option I don't think of? What I really want is not a simple OD pedal, but rather a good gain channel for an amp that has an ugly one.
What bugs me is that many of these higher end products are not available locally, so I'd basically have to buy it without really trying it with a real amp before. Thus my question.
I might had that I'm after Plexi and JMC-800 types of tones essentially.
Thanks for your help.
