High end pedal/preamp

I bought an Ibanez Valbee tube amp (1 X 6L6GC and 1 x 12ax7) and much to my surprise, I like it a lot. The clean channel, that is. As soon as you engage the boost switch, you get the most disgusting gain imaginable. I don't know what they were thinking.

BUT, the clean channel is totally amazing. And with the record out, I get tones that even the Traynor I used to use have a hard time competing. And with the new JJ 6l6GC and high gain ECC83 I just installed, it's even better! Can't wait to receive my 59 set now.

So since I like this little bugger so much (a toyish small blue cube, almost perfectly square, with a 6.5 inch speaker that has so much bottom end it's amazing), I want to buy a good pedal for the gain. This will make the perfect home or small studio tube amp. What I've been searching for so long.

I want a keeper, something I'll be able to use with other amps. For now, I'm down to three options:

1) Tonebone Hot British
2) Carl Martin Plexitone
3) Seymour Duncan SFX-03

Are these too expensive for what they actually provide? Can you get as good a tone with the OCD, Crunch Box or any other option I don't think of? What I really want is not a simple OD pedal, but rather a good gain channel for an amp that has an ugly one.

What bugs me is that many of these higher end products are not available locally, so I'd basically have to buy it without really trying it with a real amp before. Thus my question.

I might had that I'm after Plexi and JMC-800 types of tones essentially.

Thanks for your help.

The Crunchbox will take care of the Marshall 800 sounds for about 85-90 bucks used. I don't think it is as versatile as the other units that you mentioned, but it has a good tone for the money.

Re: High end pedal/preamp

The hot british will work well for you, but i found SS gain pedals to sound better than a tube pedal with a tube amp. I would recommend the crunch box also since it will be cheaper for you, and i hear it is definately top of the line (never had one though). The tonebone has an extremely good EQ and tonal options, but it is almost twice as much new. Will provide alot of gain, but not high gain modern sounds. I sold it because i thought it was too transparent for what i was looking for. Good luck.

Forgot to add- people say the hot british is an 800 in a box, but it is not. It has a similar sound in terms of gain, but it is not voiced like an 800.

I am not sure what gain tone you are looking for here. For the Marshall thing a Gov'2 and for higher gain Marshall the Jackhammer are pretty good. I like the Silver Dragon for a raspier Tweed gain tone (first channel). For a just break up, modern gain tone (Mesa Mark IIIc type vibe to me) the Duncan Twin Tube does it the best of the pedals I have tried for me. Great solo tone with it and it responds to other pedals in front of it like a preamp as well. Some folks like the Mesa V twin as well. It is also a nice pedal if that is more of the tone you want. An OD-3 for a clean boost is a very under-ratted pedal I would say for that vibe. For real inexpensive the Tubulator will do a decent tube screamer as will the Bad Monkey.

But, each of us has our favorites. Then there is the pedal of the month club, of which I and many others appear to be members. Welcome to the party!:reporter:

And what about moded pedals? Some say that a Spina moded DS-1 is like a JMC-800 in a box... moded pedals could be an option too I guess.

Oh well, I think I start to sense that I'm not going to find what I'm after right away. I guess I'll have to experiment a little.
