All of the current overdrive pedals are of the "boost" flavor. I have a Tube Screamer which does that job fine. I would like a different flavor of pedal that will have enough gain by itself to sound good, but I don't want a buzzy distortion (DS-1) or fuzz.

You might not be interested in Tube Screamer clones because it sounds like you want an different tonal color altogether, but FYI some Tube Screamer clones such as the Biyang OD-10 have a ton more head room, like 12 on the Tube Screamer would be 9 on the Biyang.

Try the updated Plexitone (9V version) from Carl Martin. It sounds like a cranked plexi (EVH) at about 1/3 of the drive level and goes up from there.

The Wampler SLOstortion is my favorite high gain pedal. It's a little different flavor than the Triple Wreck and the plexi style pedals. It's the high pedal on my board to go along with a Wampler Dual Fusion and a Rockett Designs Blue Note.
