I'm looking for a cheap portable tube combo thats going enough headroom to work well with modellers and distortion pedals. The cleans gotta be atleast decent.

so far i'm looking into the fender hotrod deluxe, kustom coupes....

I'd look into those visual sound workhorse amps, but they're a bit pricey cause of their rarity.

what can you guys suggest?

Welcome to the forum. The fender hot rod series are good basic tube platforms to do what you want. If you can find an old Fender Twin, grab it. Because they are so loud and heavy, they often don't command the huge prices that other old 60's and 70's Fender amps do. I'd bet that would be the best clean platform to start off with.

When I think clean, I think Twin. (I also think Hiwatt, but a Twin is easier to find and cheaper, I think)

Re: High Headroom Tube Combo

For max clean, a Silverface Twin, Quad, or Super Six Reverb, or the Dual Showman Reverb in a head only configuration.

I too, also think immediately of a fender twin. But, if you really just want the amp as a super clean high headroom affair, you could look to the solid-state world....enter the Roland JC120 (or the halfpower version). Especially if you're going to stick a modeller in the front.. They were THE amp for those 80's FX freaks.....

Re: High Headroom Tube Combo

check out the Randall MTS module range. all-tube, it works by using pre-amp modules based on real circuitry from leading tube amps. I have the Recto pre-amp which uses the same components as seen in the Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifiers. The amp I have is a small 20W combo, weighs about 35 lbs so easy to cart around and has numerous handy features such as direct recording outs, line outs, a silent mode for late night playing and recording. If you decide you want to swap out a high-gain module for a nice clean tube sound, you can do exactly that. Check them out, the MTS range at http://www.randallamplifiers.com

No question about it.............. The Twin has the most headroom and the highest volume to remain clean in any amp I have ever used. Oh yeah................ Welcome!!
