High output bridge humbucker with a Pearly Gates neck?

So I have a custom Balaguer guitar that's all mahogany with an ebony fretboard. It came stock with their Evergreen pickups, but I found them to be too dark for my tastes. So I slapped in a set of Pearly Gates I had lying around and it really opened up the guitar. But now I'm wanting something more high gain in the bridge for stuff like early Thrice, NOFX, Strung Out, Senses Fail, Soasin, etc, etc. I'm cheap right now, so all I want to swap out is the bridge pickup. So what high output pickup would work best with the Pearly Gates neck in an all mahogany/ebony fretboard guitar? I've been maily eyeing the JB and Custom, but I'm open to other suggestions.

Here's a pic for guitar pr0n sake...

How high in output do you want to go? I like the idea of the Custom, but I also love the 59/Custom Hybrid, which isn't as high of an output and might balance a bit better.

The JB is as hot as I'm willing to go, but probably hotter than the 59/Custom hybrid.

Softens the spike. Gives more body. Makes it less stiff.

Jason Becker perpetual burn is a good option. The Custom 5 is another ...

Custom Custom pairs well with the PGn, in my experience.

Custom would be a good choice. I wouldn't use a stock JB in a mahogany guitar, as sometimes they get squirrely in that wood (and sometimes they don't).

Re: High output bridge humbucker with a Pearly Gates neck?

I would like to hear a clip of a JB getting "squirrely" in mahogany.

Those JB's that misbehave in mahogany tend to get yanked pretty quickly & not recorded. Notorious for the annoying high end (it's been compared here to dentist's drill & a cheap old trumpet) along with a flabby/farty low end. JB's don't seem to have those issue in brighter woods, and they don't have them in all mahogany guitars either. A haven't seen the Custom wind have issues in any type of wood.

I'd go distortion,,,,,,,,,,,but since you don't want quite that output then the custom should be ideal.

About the ceramic-loaded Duncan SH-5 Custom...

I am blown away by the UOA5. Warmer, crunchier, painful squeaky treble detail removed, more dynamics of course, and when I pummel the palm mutes it still sounds super tight. Perfect match for my Agile 3100!
I had a couple Customs (awful), which became C8's, which have since become C UOA5's.

I use an A2 59/C with mine, and it goes so well with the PGn, that they might as well make it part of a set. Very few bridge pickups match the vulgar nature of the Pearly Gates as a A2 59/C. Pretty sweet in the middle position as well.

Re: High output bridge humbucker with a Pearly Gates neck?

I was going to suggest that, but got the impression he wants something hotter.

Re: High output bridge humbucker with a Pearly Gates neck?

If ya need some heat, a Dimebucker also pairs pretty well with a Pearly Gates.

A Dimebucker opens the door into an entire world of IMNSHO superior neck pickups...

Personally I I'd go for either the PG/59-C A2 combo for a more vintage hot sound, or if I had to go for a hotter tone I'd do the Dimebag Darrell approved '59/Dimebucker combo.

But the OP wants to keep the neck, so I'd go with my first combo. It's very versatile, especially with fancy wirings. They respond really well to coil splitting too.

Re: High output bridge humbucker with a Pearly Gates neck?

A JB coil smokes a Custom coil for splitting every day of the week, especially with an A2, my friend. ;)
