High output neck Humbuckers

Who uses high output neck HBs and what style do you use it for? I just recieved an Invader from Kac and I'm thinking of pairing it with a JB in the neck. I figure the Invader is ridiculous, and so is the JB in the neck... perfect match! ;)

Seriously though, what do you use and for what? What are the "standard" H/O HBs?

Re: High output neck Humbuckers

I use an EMG 85 in the neck of my Tele. I've also used a Tele Hotrails in the neck, and a TB-6... No problems... :)

Re: High output neck Humbuckers

A JB in the neck is WAY too "spanky". The Air Norton is an AWESOME high output neck pickup.

Re: High output neck Humbuckers

The JB is my all time favorite neck pickup.

Really smooth and creamy, wails like a banshee, a bit dark and "evil", but never muddy (in my setup, others seem to have issues)... and split it´s the next best thing to a H/S setup... a very "fluid" tone splittable to a great faux single :headbang:

Mine is paired with a Duncan Custom in the axe at left

Re: High output neck Humbuckers

I've used the JB in the neck of my Carvin with no issues. It's pretty much like Zerb described it. I paired mine with a CC and it did a great job at creamy lead tones.

Re: High output neck Humbuckers

Why not go for it? Too many safe choices are made in the name of Rock-n-Roll!

I just installed a 15.5k Gibby Iommi in the neck of my Epi LP, and it sounds great all by itself for driven rock/metal. The mix of the Iommi pair is a little lacking, but the bridge Iommi rules.

My favorite neck pickups are the EMG 81 and SH-6n. Also, I used an EMG mid booster with the SH-6, so that thing was spitting some nails!

Also, I'm about to hook up my Kramer with an Invader bridge, and Hot Rails (bridges) in the middle & neck.

Re: High output neck Humbuckers

What also works well are the original Dirty fingers... but you need the utput of a distortion or more to match it in the bridge ;)

Re: High output neck Humbuckers

The JB in the neck suits my taste alot better than the JB in the bridge! Also, the DDn is a GREAT pickup that most folks overlook!!!!! Try one out!

Re: High output neck Humbuckers

I like the Super II in the neck. Its great as a high output neck and its either coil in parallel with another coil from my 59 works great to for me to get some nice clean tones.

Re: High output neck Humbuckers

Interesting! Users of JB in the neck...where do you set the pickup? I found it unbearably spanky but maybe I didn't noodle enough. Should I set it low? I'm going to give it a try.

Re: High output neck Humbuckers

I have it with the screw coil towards the neck and set so that the output matches up with the Custom @the bridge.

Re: High output neck Humbuckers

I am going to try the JB in the neck, I'm just wondering about other options. I've heard good and bad things about the Norton/Air Norton, and nothing but good things about the DD.

What is the Super II?

How is the Invader Neck? It seems a little tame by the numbers.

Re: High output neck Humbuckers

I've got a Distortion in the neck of my Fake Les Paul. I almost never use neck HBs, as I tend to find them too dark for almost anything, so I chose this one simply for it's ability to sustain FOREVER under high gain. For high-on-the-neck single note legato stuff, it's very cool and the brightish character of the DD helps balance out the mud I typically hear in neck position. I would expect a JB to perform somewhat similarly and perhaps even better for those type of leads, as its upper-mid hump should produce a nice singing tone. But I'm just guessing...

Re: High output neck Humbuckers

I play mostly blues and usually use lower output, ( low 7's to mid 8's ) PAF vintage wind stye pups in the neck of my teles. Recently put a higher output Manlius humbucker ( around 10K ) in the neck of my tele to test it out. That sucker is staying put!

I assumed it would be way to hot and dark/middy/muddy. This pickup really opened my eyes and has quickly turned in to my fave. Amazing calirty, tone and touch sensitivity. Clean or dirty, it's full of tone and soul.

Re: High output neck Humbuckers

I think a high output pickup in the neck would probably work great with a spin-a-split. Dial in as much heat or wood as you want.

But without the SAS, fughet aboud it...

There is a neck version of the Invader which is plenty beefy even at 7.2k.

A Super II is supposed be the neck version of a dimarzio Super Distortion pickup.
