High Output Pickups Help!!

Hi Room

1st post on here

I have recently purchased a new bridge pickup rated as 16k

I have noticed that when I really hit the strings hard they sound a little crackly and distorted (only slightly) when im playing clean, but are ok when playing normally

Just want to check if this is normal.....

WElcome to the forum.

I think it's normal. It's just the added output of the pickup making your clean channel clip.

yep,totally normal the high output distorts the clean-channel.What amp are you using?

Im using an Epiphone G400 through a marshall AVT100....

Its only a small crackle when i really hit the strings, is it something to worry about? are u sure its normal....

Try lowering the pickup a bit.

Its normal, and just the result of the output of the pup like others said. Yes try lowering it, or if you really want good cleans possibly go with a lower output pup.

Basically hitting the strings harder sends a stronger signal to the amp, which distorts the tone much easier and playing softly sends a lower signal for a cleaner sound. High output pickups send higher signals, so the slightly distorted sound is normal.

1 last question, I have set the bridge pickup height to 3/32 of an inch.....is this standard?

For a lot of players, this little bit of crackle or clip is a desirable feature, particularly from a tube amp, where the break-up (crackle, clip) is smooth and gutsy.

I'm not as familiar with the Marshall line as with Fender and others, but is your amp a solid state or tube? If it's solid state, the break-up generally doesn't sound quite as good. But it won't harm the amp, they're designed to take some break-up.

High output picks do distort...thats what they are meant to do partly I guess.....
I have set my Jb.. low and it sounds nice

Okay, just checked out the AVT100 on line and it is a hybrid, meaning tube preamp, solid-state power.

Yes thats what I was trying to say High Out put picksups are designed to distort the amp a bit for an over driven sound

True, they are designed to hammer the preamp so it will clip at least a little bit when pushed (hit strings hard).
