Re: High $$$$$$ strings.... worth it?

I am completely sold on the Snake Oil strings. The feel is incredible, and the tone is much less harsh and biting. $8.50 a pack...big deal.

I am actually amazed that most of you, who will obsess about maple vs rosewood, or alnico II vs V, or mahogany vs. maple, or any of the other small, minescule things we obess about when it comes to tone will skimp on strings. Strings are the VERY FIRST THING in your tone chain.

Seymour Duncan goes out of his way to ensure that all of the components in his pickups are top shelf and vintage correct, regardless of cost. And we applaude those efforts by supporting any purchasing his products without regard to cost. The same goes for handwired tube amps, or handmade custom guitars...we want only the best. To be the best, you have to use the best. Seymour could use cheaper wire, cheaper plastic, not be concerned with vintage correct dye and say....these guys will never know the difference, but he doesn't.

It's like being a pro golfer, and playing with the cheapest golf balls you can find, or driving a Corvette or Porche and putting regular unleaded in it, then wondering why performance is off. It does make a difference. You will spend $200+ on an overdrive pedal, $160 on a custom shop pickup yet you won't spend $8 on a set of strings that are superior?

Re: High $$$$$$ strings.... worth it?

For Electric i use the cheap local stores house brand..... no name strings. They are good and just as good as D Addario which i used before but are $2 a pack more expensive. I find no differences in most electric strings. Acoustics i'm a lot more picky... I always try and find a bright sounding set that stays bright. But i have not owned an acoustic in years.

I hate cheap strings, the innotation is always off, the D strings break the moment you just look at it, the sound is mediocre at best, no pull just a rubbery bad feel and endless tuning hassles.

They must be some really cheap strings! The local store brand strings i buy are the same quality as D'Addario..... Only cheaper

D'Addario has not made good strings since the early 90's, when those onebag strings arrived.
They used to be very good strings, well some of their classical strings are still great, but the electric and steelstring acoustic are not what they use to be.
They are quite inconsistant here.
