Higher efficiency 10" speakers for Princeton

Prayin' to Cheeses
Hi all,

Rather than buy yet another amp, I think I want to just upgrade my old Princeton reverb. It has the original (oxford, maybe?) 10" speaker in it. I want something that will be more efficient, less breakup and bass flub, but will still express those warm, shimmery blackface cleans. It seems like there are fewer options in the 10" size. I've looked at Weber. Considering Eminence Ragin Cajun. Vintage correct does not matter so much to me, it's more about improving overall headroom/output while cleaning up and boosting low end, if that makes any sense. Any suggestions?

Re: Higher efficiency 10" speakers for Princeton

A buddy of mine put a Cajun in his Superchamp XD. He said it made the amp noticeably louder and more chimey.

i LOVE my weber 10a150t

a 10f150 or 10f150t might be a great choice for you

Re: Higher efficiency 10" speakers for Princeton

Jim Campilongo often sings the praises of the Celestion G10 Vintage. It's rated at 97 dB, not as efficient as the Ragin Cajun. Sounds good, though.

Re: Higher efficiency 10" speakers for Princeton

Ragin Cajun is a MONSTER high efficiency 10" driver!

What would it do for my BF Champ clone? I'm trying to decide between the RC and a Cannabis Rex. The Rex is a bit louder, but the RC seems like it might be more.... champish.

Re: Higher efficiency 10" speakers for Princeton

Now I think I may have to buy one of each and try them both out! Jeremy, I now remember researching this a while back and the Weber 10f150t is supposed to be their preferred replacement for Princeton reverbs. I have heard so many good things about Rajun Cajuns too.

I was thinking I would get a second 2 channel combo amp, or maybe a micro stack for home. But then I thought, Geez I don't really need anything louder than the Princeton (which is plenty freaking loud) and it might be more fun to just use pedals at home for dirt. It'd save me some $$ too, since I was considering a Mini Rectifier combo or maybe the new MK V 25. $100 bucks on a speaker and a trip to the amp tech is a lot less than a new Mesa combo. And the amp sounds sooooo great already, just flubby on the low end when pushed to about 4 on the volume.

Ooo, tough call!

For me it's the RC, but I am a midrange FREAK, and the mids w the RC are really neutral. YMMV, though.

Re: Higher efficiency 10" speakers for Princeton

Didn't consider the Rex. I got the impression it would break up more an maybe be a little more mellow on the high end...?

Re: Higher efficiency 10" speakers for Princeton

Well, the C. Rex is a 12", anyway. It's an option for me because I haven't built the cabinet yet. No so your Princeton.

Re: Higher efficiency 10" speakers for Princeton

Have you thought about modding your amp to use a 12" spkr? It's pretty easy and reversible to add a baffle with a 12" cutout to the back of the existing baffle. Gives you a much greater selection of high efficiency spkrs and more sound pressure coming off of the larger cone. More volume, more overhead, more clarity.

Re: Higher efficiency 10" speakers for Princeton

I have heard of people doing that... I kind of wanted to leave it mostly unmodified cause it's a 67 blackface.

It's a working amp though so I might consider it, or just using a different baffle and saving the old one.

Re: Higher efficiency 10" speakers for Princeton

+1 on the Rajun Cajun.

As noted, this speaker does have a relatively flat mid range.

Have one installed in a 5 watt Ibanez TS amp. It really helped the amp - firm bass, smooth and flat mids, and clear highs as compared with the original speaker.

Am not a TS'er fan due to the midrange so I looked for a speaker w/flatter mids and was rewarded.

Re: Higher efficiency 10" speakers for Princeton

cajun fo sho. helped a mate and put one in his micro champ modelling thing. big positive difference.

Re: Higher efficiency 10" speakers for Princeton

Care for another Cajun endorsement? It kept me from ditching my Princeton Recording Amp. It can handle whatever you throw at it. Simple as that.
