highorder pickups

I've read nothing but absolutely raving reviews about Jeff's (highorder) pick-ups in an australian guitar forum

just wondering what anybody here thinks of them, and what models has anybody tried?

Re: highorder pickups

I got one on order and should be getting it soon. I got Jeff to wind an A2 mag just under 9K for me. Super clean work. I can't wait to pop it in my GMW.
Chris.

Re: highorder pickups

Very good workmanship and attention to details. Unfortunantely I don't have any of the three I bought loaded into an axe currently. I guess I need more guitars LOL!

Re: highorder pickups

Excellent workmanship, quality components. He built it exactly as I requested. Of course, I did not quite know enough to buy a custom wind yet. When it came, it did not sound as I had expected. Of course, that said I'm 100% positive it sounded exactly the way it should based on the way I ordered it. Make sense? He built exactly what I ordered.

My point is, take the time to know exactly what you want, coil size, color, magnet, wire, etc. It takes alot of experience and experimentation to know what the different magents sound like, the different wire guage, the need to use thinner wire for trembucker overwinds etc. If you know what you want, you will be very pleased when the product arrives.

Re: highorder pickups

I have a 8.7K, A2 in a Les Paul. It's my favorite of all the pickups I've tried. Jeff is a great guy to work with too. I highly recommend his pickups.

Re: highorder pickups

Great stuff indeed. I have the 8.5/7.8 A2 in my LP and I love them. Very clear and articulate. They crunch very well too. I was worried about flubby bass with the A2 on the bridge....not so!

Same thing I bought unpotted. I also bought a Maximus 9.7K A5. Can't remember is I potted that one or not.

All of mine are "double white" and the white turned out way too bright for the plastic on my LP's. I'll need some covers for them or age them, but it would be a shame to age them, they look so great.

How is the Maximus?

Sorry, I didn't leave it in long enough to really remember

Form what I can vaguely remember, it was very powerful (42 wire with an A5 and full bobbins), but the 8.5K with the A2 seemed really powerful as well. The 7.8K neck was real nice.

That's not a good sign!

But seriously, I've never tried one but have also heard a lot of great things about them.

LOL!

My axe was a 1996 LP Classic Premium Plus, and I have push/pull pots to split the coils. I have a great older zebra 496R/500T set with 4 conductor wiring. Note: The flash "whitens" the cream parts.

The issues were
1. Single conductor wiring=push/pull pots aren't of use
2. I ordered double whites, but they looked way too white even with Historic white pickup rings. I need to get some nice covers on them or age them before I will use them again, maybe in my 2002 Std. I'm having a love/hate relationship with the BB Pros, but the same thing happened to the 496R/500T, and now it's just "Love".

Re: highorder pickups

I can't imagine stock Gibbys being anywhere near as good as Jeff's stuff...but to each his own.

Seriously though, Jeff's product is great. If you know your stuff order a custom p'up, if not, go with his suggestions. He knows his shizzle and will hook you up with (not a good) but a great p'up.

Zhang,

Try his stuff...you'll be impressed for sure.

I'll let you know when mine arrives! Can't wait for it and the matching neck pickup.

I currently have an A2 8.5 bridge and 7.9 neck set installed on my semi-hollow. Sweet sweet pickups, tone for days, flawless craftsmanship, and great service/communication from Jeff.

What other people have said is right: you should know something about pickups, magnets, DC res., etc., before diving in. As another poster wrote, if you don't know pickups well, you might end up with exactly what you ordered but not what you wanted! :laugh2:

he's offereing some new "assymentric" winds that sound interesting, though I haven't tried them.

Zhang, say it aint so ...

'Fraid so. But as far as I know he only makes humbuckers*, so THERE!

*(At least last time I checked his site. Jeff, if you've branched out since then, my apologies...)

Re: highorder pickups

Pretty sure he does P-90s too. Could be wrong on that one, but he sure nailed the 'bucker tone (IMO).

He's a cool guy--not out there to make millions. He's a tonefreak (like most of us here). I've spoken to him on more than one occasion and it seems to me that if he wasn't making a great product he'd quit the game.

*bump* Any word on the Maximus? And what neck pup did you get to go with it?

Re: highorder pickups

I just checked his site and didn't see any mention of P90's, but I might have missed it. If he doesn't, I bet he gets into them soon because they are easier to make than humbuckers and because they use 2 magnets, you can get all kinds of unique sounds with magnet mixing.
