hillbilly recording tip No. 55

if you don't have a mic stand, use some books. if it's not tall enough, add another book. if it's too high, take away a book. You may have to fine tune it with a thin book or 2.

I've been recording crappy stuff for 20 years and I've never owned a mic stand. It's all books and boxes baby.

if you kick the mic over you first panic, then try to find where you had it again. it's like tightrope walking without a net.

Back in the day, I recorded a bunch of songs with the mic balanced on a wah pedal. I'd sit there for ages adjusting the angle of the pedal to get it pointing at the amp just right. Worked like a charm.

Very nice advanced mic placement method you've got there. And, nice Randall combo on the right! Is that a newer one with the Valve-Dynamic stuff in it?

hehe, thanks. yeah (well, relatively new - a few years old now). I like it, now that I've switched from using the red OD setting to the green. The temptation was to use the higher gain setting, but it's kinda less full sounding and harsh/brittle. I've also realized the clean side takes pedals really well, so that adds a whole other avenue for additional sounds for recording.

i remember micing a friend's amp by taping my mic to the top of a 2-liter coke bottle. got it at just the right height. twas a combo.

Re: hillbilly recording tip No. 55

that's even hillbillier!

No, if it was a quart bottle of beer or Jack, THEN it would be hillbillier. In the hood, we use a bottle of Colt .45 malt liquor.

By the way, this thread should be vaulted. Not only is it funny, but it is practical as well. DankStar you rule, bro.

thanks 75lespaul!

[btw the wife's stockings in front of a mic work great to reduce pops/explosives during vocal takes :naughty:]
