Hiwatt in a pedal

I've been digging the Hiwatt sound lately. Listening to old Pink FLoyd and The Who tracks makes me want a full Hiwatt 100watt stack for that vintage crunch. Then I put my feet back on the ground and realize I don't have that kind of money to invest in a Hiwatt right now.

Is there a good dirt pedal you know of that would get me into Hiwatt territory? I looked at the Tech 21 character series, specifically the Leeds pedal a bit today. Many dirt pedals seem to be fall into the category of Marshall sound or the Tube Screamer sound, which are cool but not quite what I'm looking for.

The overdriven Hiwatt sound is a religious experience.

You won't get that sort of vibe out of a pedal. It'd be like playing a video game hoping to get the feel of whipping around a track at 200mph.

well, the Gilmour and Townshend Hiwatt tones you seek weren't just coming from the amps. They both were using fuzz boxes to push the amps. Townshend was using a lot of the natural amp distortion, but a lot of the heavier stuff he was using a fuzz. From what I understand Gilmour runs them pretty clean. If you already have a good tube amp, any good Fuzz pedal will get you closer than any single pedal through any other kind of amp.

sure is not easy getting these guys sounds correctly... that is for sure... i have never been one to be willing to pay $3500 for a Pete Townshend Signature Hiwatt amp no matter how much of a fan i am... i have friends that own these amps and vintage Hiwatts and they are beasts to play thru... really are hard to use if you are just playing in a home and small bars...

Pete's Hiwatts where dimed!!! many times he was trying to turn the volume up and they were on full already... Pete's were gain boosted and customized greatly... Gilmours were made louder and cleaner from what i understand since he used pedals more often for all his dirt...

I use Peavey Classic series amps myself... a C30 and a C50head... these are no Hiwatts but they do what i want them to do at lower volumes... the EL-84's and the preamp distortion have an English sound to them... i boost the gain up for solos with a Vox Satchuator... and sometimes i use a Danoelectro Fab Tone Fuzz thru the clean channel for some serious fuzz...

It's going to sound odd but i find my C30 is better at AC/DC style crunch then my 1981 JCM 800 head...

Folks I know that have tried the Catlinbread pedal have really thought it did a great job. I have not tried it.

Re: Hiwatt in a pedal

I have nothing to add useful other than this thread inspired me to check out some Hi-Watt clips-I've not played one in 20 years. One of my fave players, Frank Hannon from Tesla played modded DR103s for quite some time- MONSTROUS tone.

I'd be all over this one- ON POINT! Killer tone (and good playing)
