I LOVE Hiwatts!!! In some ways even more than I love a good old Marshall because it just has such versatility and incredible tone. Wide open, punchy cleans with incredible headroom to a phat, huge sounding distortion. IMO hands down one of the greatest amps ever produced.
I have been told by many a Hiwatt user that the Hiwatt cab/speakers is a huge part of their tone... I heard Hiwatt heads do not sound as nice thru a Marshall cab...
Anyone saying that is just hooked on the classic Hiwatt tone that comes from that combination.
In reality, Hiwatt amps can sound great through any combination of cabinets and speakers. Just like anything else, it's personal taste. If you think a Hiwatt amp is a little bright, don't pair it up with bright sounding speakers.
Many years ago, I played through a Hiwatt 100 watt head and a semi-generic 4x12 cabinet loaded with 4 EVM12L speakers - and the tone, sustain, and "balls" it had knocked me on my butt. I've been a changed musician ever since...my evidence that a Hiwatt cabinet with Fane speakers is not a requirement.
When I bought my sound city, the guy who I bought it from told me "when you go to buy speakers... trust me and get some Fane's". Although I'm partial to celestian greenbacks, I'm going to give some Fane's a shot when I go to get new speakers.
I read an interesting quote from an interview Pete Townshend did for Guitar Magazine in 1973 about Hiwatts... He says that he knows that guys like Ron Wood are running out and having custom made guitars for themselfs and that he could do the same but his Hiwatts sound so good no matter what he plugs into them.. Says Hiwatt custom makes his amps for him and you can't buy them off the rack like the make for him... He says when your amps are as great as these you really don't need custom made guitars... At the time of this interview Pete said he was really enjoying a Grestch thru his Hiwatts.. Not the Chet Atkins model, it was a Duo something... It looked like a Les Paul shaped Grestch. He used that guitar for a few shows in the Uk 1973.
Later on in the late 70's Pete's LP's were heavily modded, and in 79-82 his Shecters were custom made.... but this quote is from 73....
that gretsch he is talking about is the duo jet... i love the reissues they have now and play with them on heavier amps when im shopping around for guitar amps
