well they are clean until you open them up to ear damaging volumes... i've stood beside a few stacks of those that were opened up at some shows by a Who Tribute band and they can sound nice and crunchy under that volume... mind you they had the souped up PT signature models....

No i have not tried the Hiwatt OD. If it's done by Music Ground in the UK i'm sure it will be expensive...

I think maybe because they understand the clean sound they could be particularly great at a mild gain overdrive pedal that has a level knob that can send any amp cooking a great transperent gain. However I would be really sceptical of their distorion pedal.

Well I should know....anyways...if it is the big amps...then it is most likely the speakers breaking up badly;)
Those amps are clean...clean and big!
Back to the drivestuff....they do make great two channel amps now as well!!
Distortion is about the most easy thing to make.....staying clean and clear is the hard part!

Yeah, I cranked the handwired 100watt reissue a few months ago and no longer need to worry about birth control. The one I tried really didn't give up much crunch.

I really liked the high gain 50 from their cheaper range. 95% close to the Hiwatt clean tone, plus good overdrive. But only with fanes. I tried one with V30s and it was an UGLY scene...

This week I get to play with a 71 200w Hiwatt. Perhaps 'joust' is a better term...

In a related note, the best overdrive I've heard recently was the Catalinbread hyperpak Dirty Channel, which is a tiny (I've seen chunkier french fries) pedal that was designed to go after the 'Live at Leeds' tone. And it does it very well...

it maybe speaker break up but i've heard and played thru some Hiwatts in the UK and North America and the ones i've heard without any pedals in front of it when cranked can get nice and crunchy.... a friend of mine had a studio in Toronto with various amps... he had a 76 Custom 100 head into a 74 Fane loaded cab.... with an SG into it it was NICE and crunchy... Nothing high gain but enough gain to not worry about adding an OD in front of it except for solos.... It made my 5150 stack disappear in the volume on the band floor while we were jamming....

But it was so loud it hurt!

WEM (Watkins Electic Music) a lot of the English Invasion bands played WEM amplifiers when they were club acts. The Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones, and The Yardbirds used them. Most of them played the 17watt WEM Dominator with the V front before moving on to Vox AC-30's.

I've got question about Fanes, they are increadibly expensive, I asked before but nobody answeared. I am not saying its overpriced crap, I think that such company wouldnt do that, but whats so different about them, and would they work for stuff like, melodic, high gain Euro metal. Sorry, thanks. Here is an example of expensive.

They arent that expensive for alnico speakers. Webers and celestion alnicos are higher priced.

Whoops mistake in reading. They are more expensive then weber but not too different price from celestion blues.

The pedal is made by Fernandez...........There is nothing HIWATT about it other than the name stenciled on it. A friend of mine had one for a weekend. Sent it packing after that.

There's a speaker out there called the Scholtz Sugarcone that is supposed to be PHENOMINAL with Hiwatts.

I think the guy that designed them worked closely with Dave Reeves (or maybe even Harry Joyce, before he passed....) trying to obtain THAT tone.

They ain't cheap either, but are definitely an option.

ALSO....the Weber Thames is a take on the Fane....Eminence makes one too, but not sure of the model.

The allure is just like the old amps....they put out just what is put in with little coloration, even at monstrous watts.

If I had another Hiwatt, I'd HAVE to grab some old Fanes....if for anything, to see firsthand what the deal is.

I had a Custom 50 & ran it with a Greenback-loaded 2x12.....like Rid said, it was pretty sweet at lower volumes, but anything over 10:00 on the volume, it started to fart out.

Anyway, as for a Hiwatt pedal................too many good ones out there to be concerned with their own.

I'd actually love to hear a Plexitone thru a cranked Hiwatt !!!! :32:

I had a Harry Joyce 2x12 with Scholtz speakers and they were they thinnest weakest speaker at the first Vintage HIWATT Convention in 2006. They absolutely sucked! I blew the cab out on ebay shortly thereafter. Everyone there was disappointed with them.

Reeves Amplification has an Excellent clone of an early 1970's HIWATT Fane. This is the closest thing to the real deal! Due to the proprietary agreement with Eminence, Reeves can only sell them in cabs, but their cabs make almost all other cabs seem like toys.

everyone i know that has a early 70's Hiwatt cab all say they even make their Marshall heads sound better.... nice speakers...
