I woulda quoted you Puckboy, but Odie beat me to it. And there's few things gayer than two guys with the same quote in their sig.

Re: Hiwatt vs Plexi

When played in a small club what is the sound pressure level generated by a 100w Hiwatt or Plexi?

a Hiwatt creates tremendous sound pressure. I think one guy clocked in with a Dr103 at 118db, i remember reading that on the Hiwatt forum.

I have a cool clip of somebody with a Hiwatt DR201 (200 watter) and the amp is completely dimed. You can hear in the clip how loud it is, it sounds rediculous. I can email to you if you want.

Re: Hiwatt vs Plexi

Fanes are for sure a very signature part to the HiWatt sound...both clean and dirty.

I run my MK4 Sound City 50+ through a 4x12 cab loaded with Fanes...I know lots of guys are down on the SC stuff but it's a killer sounding rig!

I got a Sound City 120MKIV. Not as good as yours, Its noisy and needs work, but the thing has georgeous cleans. I could posssibly live without a fender Twin with this amp.

Re: Hiwatt vs Plexi

Seriously, if you're playing at anything close to 118 dB you should be wearing ear protection. I am not kidding. Pete ******ned townsend has been getting on people's case about this stuff for years. Chest thumping loud is nice, but you need to protect your ears.

Re: Hiwatt vs Plexi

Anyways Hiwatts can play at low volumes and still sound good:)
Sometime I even have the amp in the same room where I record.
And it is a DR201, it is all down to speakers, or speaker:D

Re: Hiwatt vs Plexi

Most DR 103's actually get to 120 - 123 db. Much noticeably louder than a Plexi. The EQ on a HIWATT is not just mids either, It is much broader literally a huge wall of sonic bliss.

Re: Hiwatt vs Plexi

Everybody keeps bringing up the db's these amps will make and leaving out that the number of db's an amp will produce IS DIRECTLY LINKED to the speakers being used with the amp...an amp will produce far more volume, measured in db's with a more efficient speaker that it will with a less efficient one, period.

All that said, a 100 watt ANYTHING...bein Plexi, HiWatt, Twin Reverb...they are all loud as hell!

Very cool, flad to see another guy that belives in the Sound City's! They get a bad rap on the internet but Im gonna be honest...I have no idea why!

I have considered getting either a 120 or a 200 to keep around as a bass amp, I actually like playing bass through my 50+ at low volumes...

What all is wrong with your 120?

Re: Hiwatt vs Plexi

I think it depends on which Hiwatt your talking about. Some are extemely loud & clean, some are gain monsters, my personal fave Hiwatt is a 30 watt class A tone machine that kix more ass than almost anything, but I won't mention the model. I'm still trying to find a reasonable deal for one on ebay.

Re: Hiwatt vs Plexi

Warren DiMartini's Plexi was said to be in the 170dB range (or something ridiculous like that!) :eek2:

It seems a little exagerated.

170.75 PRESSURE (P) = 1 P.S.I. = 1 POUND PER SQUARE INCH MOST SOUND READINGS HIGHER THAN THIS REFER TO P.S.I. INSTEAD OF DB. BUILDINGS AND HOUSES HAVE APPROXIMATELY A 50 % CHANCE OF SURVIVAL REF.2.

171 (P)WORLDS LOUDEST CAR STEREOS, UP TO 80 SPEAKERS,32 CAR BATTERYS, 100,000 WATTS, 125-138 (N)

Even The Who topped out at 150db...

150 (N)ROCK CONCERT “THE WHO” TWO 10 STORY STACKS = 144 DOUBLE REFRIDGERATOR SIZED SPEAKERS, ACTUAL LEVEL REACHED 120 DB AT A DISTANCE OF 32 METERS FOR THIS NORMALIZED READING OF 150 DB.CONTINOUS LEVEL 114-118db (P) AT 32 METERS -REF.1.1982
150 ROCK CONCERT SPEAKER AT 1600 WATTS ON THE ACTUAL VIBRATING SURFACE -REF.1.1991

So....if 120db is the threshold of ear damage, everyone within the first 100ft from the stacks was being blasted.
