Hmm... $200 to $300 AUD.. What to buy that's better than my Ibanez?

I'm planning on finding something MUCH older than my Ibanez GRX-70.. But the prices of vintage guitars are skyrocketing, and my 16 year old brain can not seem to find a better alternative.. Should I just buy either a pawn-shop find or a Squier bullet strat and mod the hell out of it?
