Hmm I need a HEAVY DUTY amp!

Hey hows it going? Well you guys may have remembered me from the past, I came to ask about what AMP i should buy between the VOX AC30 and the Fender Hot Rod Deville, well turns out I didn't buy any of those amps. When I was first choosing an amp I didn't really know my playing style, but now I found out its hardrock leaning towards metal. I love playing it. Without further adue I went out and bought myself first a Mesa Maverick 2x12 35 watter, it was alright but didn't have that nice mesa distortion thats supposed to be built in, it was more of a blues amp. So I traded that in and bought myself a Mesa Nomad 2x12 45 watt amp, its a good amp.. and I use the Boss Mt-2 Metalzone on it as well.

Well enough about me ranting, I dont really like this Mesa amp, cause I can't get a heavy enough distortion .. I want something heavier an amp that can handly a lot more. So I was looking .. and I saw the Peavy 5150, what do you guys think about that? The thing is my budget is 1400 which is Canadian, so can you guys recommend me a heavy amp that I would like?

Oh one last question, with this kind of money I'll only be able to buy a head, is the head an amplifer or do I need a cabinet to get sound?

Re: Hmm I need a HEAVY DUTY amp!

Yes you need a Cabnet with a 5150 HEAD version.... it's the amp only, no speakers..... I own a 5150 and it is amazing to me!!!! I have used other 5150's besides my own in a practice studio i used and they are all great sounding... Heavy Metal type amps... but they also do The Who live At Leeds thing for me quite well!

Also they weigh a ton!!!! 91 pounds i think the head weighs in alone if i remember right..... not the easiest head to gig with but it has that sound..... I mostly use my 5150 head into a small Marshall 1x12 cab but i also have the 5150 cab in my basement

Now regarding the Mesa Triple Recitifer 3CH head, will that give me the sound out of the head? The thing is that I only have enough money for the head..lol so I don't want to have the head of the amp and nothign to use it through half a year till I save up to buy a cab..lol

No heads work without a cab. You need seperate speakers for all of them.

Damn it! Are cabs realitvley cheap?

If you want it to sound like ass, yeah. If you are getting a nice amp, you gatta have a nice cab to go with it, or you're shooting for self in the foot really. Marshall 1960 cabs can be picked up second hand and a bit beat up for not much these days, check out ebay.

Re: Hmm I need a HEAVY DUTY amp!

You should sell that Nomad to me since we live in the same country...:D

There are some nice combos around too tho... Peavey makes a combo version of the XXX and 5150...
