Hollowbody humbucker for JaZZ in Neck position

I posted a question about what would be better between a Duncan jazz and a Dimarzio virtual paf. I got a few responses but not much. I think i will go duncan in this guitar. I know obviously certain pups are not right. I have thought of a jazz or a seth lover or a 59 neck. I don't know that i will even bother with the bridge pup as i never use it. I want a sweet modern jazz tone. THe basic standard JAZZ sound, warm and smooth yet very clean, which i know a lot use PAF type Neck buckers. What do my fellow players think? very open to input.:usa1: :banana: :reporter:

I played a McKerrihan spruce top 17" at Glenn's shop a few years back with a Seth Lover in it and it sounded incredible. Not a big fan of the 59's for legit tone---have those in a 16" spruce top box and they don't really cut it. The A2 is not bad in maple top guitars...but I kinda think you get more mileage out of string choices and setup as far as a good tone anyway...get some Thomastiks.

I have never heard thomasticks before. Are they sweet pickups? I was at first thinking a jazz, but more and more i am thinking about trying a seth lover neck pick up. My ibanez hollowbody is the guitar i want put the new neck pick up in, and it just so happens it has maple back/ sides with a mohogany neck/ rosewood board and SPUCE top

hmm Seths are a great idea for Jazz. So are the A2Pro's. I am a huuuge fan of the A2Pros. I always waver between the VPAF's and A2Pros.

If you want a modern sound, without being too hi fi, a lot of clarity, and fullness - you can't go wrong with the VPAFs. They have an almost p90, single coil thing to them when you spank them. Consider the VHOT PAF too. If you want ultra fat, go Air Norton. My fave Jazz pickup is the Gibson 57 Classic, I think it's great, but it is 2 conductor. I love my hollow body guitars to have a series/parallel in them.

Have you considered Benedettos? They are KILLER for that almost acoustic attack in large hollow bodies.

Thomastik/Infeld makes strings---very good ones for jazz, about 15 bucks a set and worth it. I was just saying that pickups alone are not the magic bullet for legit jazz tone. Bridge type, tailpiece, wood, construction, body size, strings, action, and string tension all figure in much more than with solidbodies. But, I think a spruce top guitar (laminated, I guess), properly set up, would sound pretty good with a Seth Lover as opposed to more midrange heavy pickups.

BTW--if you a find an older Benedetto pu, that might be pretty cool. I have a few from the 80's that sound pretty good in a chambered LP copy that McKerrihan made. The new Benny pu's are pretty hot---10K +.

I like the Seth, if you go for a big, fat Wes sound (with flatwounds and your thumb, of course).

Personally though, I don't have the licks to evn pretend I can play like Mr. Montgomery, so I go for a slightly different approach. I use a Phat CAt set in my Epi Sheraton and they are great for bright, cutting tones that are cool for chording, or you can switch to the neck and roll off the tone and get a fat, smokey tone that's great for comping and solo or duo pieces.

Which benedetto are you refering to?

So far, I absolutely LOVE the sound of my Jazz neck. But there are way too many variables to just pick one. If I were you, I'd buy a Jazz, then if you don't like the sound, email SD and tell them, they might swap you out with a different pickup. Remember their 21 day thingy....

Dammit I do not know their models quite so well.

BTW let me say HERITAGE sound great with their jazz boxes and pickups. Want some more confusion? I happen to like the IBANEZ Super 58s. Not AMAZINGLY haromincally complex, but they work VERY well, are cheap, and they are not very hot.
