Holy Blackface, Batman!!!!!!

Now I will preface this by saying that i am not expecting a perfect example by a long shot, but it would appear that I won a 1966 Blackface Vibrolux Reverb on Ebay tonight.........for $1500!:fingersx: It has 1973 replacement CTS speakers, a 68 OT and will no doubt need a tune up, maybe a cap job and tubes, etc. But i figure that three of these amps went for $2400, $2700 and $3000 last week and a 68 silverface went for $1800 and there is a pretty minty all original Blackface listed right now for $3400, so I am pleased.....so far:laugh2: Report to follow when I receive it next week.

I'm sorry...but I can't hold this question back any longer...

What kind of job do you have? :D

Because from all the gear you've been buying it starting to sound like my dream job :laugh2:

Nice score there! I think Seymour has a Vibrolux, I'm not quite sure, one of those 40 watt Blackface amps.

Re: Holy Blackface, Batman!!!!!!

LOL.....I just got into real estate development. I passed on a few Vibroluxes because they were a bit pricey. Couldn't pass on this one. I started learning how to play again after we sold out family business last summer.......that is what has been financing my mid life crisis/collecting bug. But I only bought stereo and guitar stuff. My younger brother bought a new BMW and a Porsche Cabriolet ......and both of the brothers are building new houses....but they both have young kids Personally, I want to build new houses for other people so I CAN BUY MORE GUITARS....MUAH, HA, HA, HA, HA!!!!!:chairfall

DiGel, baby!!!!!:fingersx:      My problem is not that i buy stuff, but my tendency with these things is to never sell or trade anything once i get it. Same with the rest of the family. 3 generation sof that is how we ended up with enough old guns to arm a fair sized Iraqi insurgent group:chairfall and a boat full AND a garage full of deep sea fishing gear.....but thats my dad's stuff:laugh2:

Re: Holy Blackface, Batman!!!!!!

and by the by, Christian.......you have some fairly exotic gear. And I have about 18 years on you and a house that ALMOST fits all of the stuff:laugh2: . What is your gear list going to look like in 2024? :chairfall

Re: Holy Blackface, Batman!!!!!!

Schweeet! I'm glad you got exactly what you were after. I think that's the best way to go. If you're jonesing for an old amp, buy an old amp. Weird on that 68 OT though. Do you figure that someone found an old 68 and put it in a few years ago when the original blew?

Re: Holy Blackface, Batman!!!!!!

Hey Scott.....the seller says that he has owned the amp for 12 years and it came that way. He figures some previous owner torched the tranny and replaced it and 2 of the caps and the speakers. You figure the newest identifiable part on the amp is from 1973 and it has apparently been ok since then, so whoever did that damage must have plugged it into an arc welder or something similar:laugh2: At that price, i'm not all that worried about a cap job or anything like that. Fortunately, there is an old fellow in Tampa who was recommended to me by some very knowledgable folks who has been working on Fender amps since he got out of the Navy......in 1962:fingersx:

Re: Holy Blackface, Batman!!!!!!

Rewind 10 year to 1996. I had major Vibrolux GAS. I located a Mint BF vibrolux in a local music shop. They wanted $800 for it. The frugalmeister I am thought this was a obscene price.:yell: I tried to haggle with him, But he wouldn't budge. Finally he said to me ` If ya want that SF Princeton next to it? I'll let it go for $325'. With a smile on my face out came my credit card.:D
Ching-Ching,and out the door I went with my new Princeton.:13: No regrets on buying the Princeton... BUT DAMM I LET THE BIG FISH GET AWAY !:smack: It would be worth 3x what I payed for it now.:blackeye:

Re: Holy Blackface, Batman!!!!!!

Hmmm...and me with an original and perfect '66 Vibrolux-Reverb output tranny without a home! :smack:

Interested?:laugh2:

Re: Holy Blackface, Batman!!!!!!

Hell, Lew.....I have already aquired so many unused parts, but i'm willin to listen:laugh2: This thing is going to be a player, so i'm not so worried about originality. What do you know about the CTS speakers? I have been led to belive that they are one of the several companies that suppied speakersto Fender, but i hadn't heard about them until recently. Any experience, comments, etc?

Lew,

What did you end up with in your Lux?

Except for a new baffle board, mine is stock. I bought it from a guy who'd tried to put a 12 and a 10 speaker in it at the same time and he ruined the baffle board. BUT: he didn't ruin the original grill cloth. So a new baffle board fixed at all up and I reused the original '66 grill cloth. Mine has a pair of '66 C10NA's from Jensen. One was already in the amp and the other I had been saving for just such an amp.

Re: Holy Blackface, Batman!!!!!!

The original BF Vibrolux came with either Jensen C10Q or Oxford 10L5 depending on the year. IF the CTS doesn't work for you replace it with the Jensen RI it should give you the vintage vibe. Good Luck man thats a great amp.

They came with C10N's too, and alot of guys (like me :laugh2: ) think the Jensen C10N is the ultimate 10 in a blackface Vibrolux Reverb. Mine is a pretty old one...I said '66 but it might be a '64 or '65. Lew

Re: Holy Blackface, Batman!!!!!!

Let me see what i need to know here. Is the Vibrolux a 4 ohm amp? If i do decide to replace the speakers, would one of the Weber speakers be a better choice than the Italian Jensens?

Re: Holy Blackface, Batman!!!!!!

See....it's threads like this that have 2 '66 Blackfaces coming to me on Thursday!!! :D

One day I've never played a Fender amp.....next I've got 2 beauties :laugh2:

CONGRATS JDM....enjoy the hell out of that amp :beerchug:

Re: Holy Blackface, Batman!!!!!!

Thanks, Puck. We need to have a Florida Jam once i learn how to play:laugh2: I found out what the CTS speakers are. They were apparently one of the AlNiCo speaker offered in the Lux, JBL D110 being the other (I think). Weber recommends either the 1.25 or 1.5 inch voice coil speakers as replacements both in AlNiCo and ceramic. Since this is a 40 watter, i wouldn't be sure whether to use the 25 or 50 watters.
