Holy Explorer, Batman!

Has anyone ever played one of these? I wonder if it sounds as ridiculous as it looks?

Re: Holy Explorer, Batman!

There's something strangely interesting about that guitar. Definitely would get some attention on stage.

Re: Holy Explorer, Batman!

I saw the V variant in a shop a while back. Aside from the holes, it was a good spec - 24 frets, single hum, single volume, split diamond inlays, Steinberger tuners (I think, not sure).

I'd put a veneer on the front and rear.

Re: Holy Explorer, Batman!

First of all, why do you think it sounds bad?

However - I can't get it out of my mind that some dolt at Gibson forgot to laminate the top/back of a weight relieved/chambered explorer and now they are trying to hawk it as this...

I kind of dig it. Wouldn't want it. I can see a few (very few) who might.

Not sure if this was directed at me, but I would never jump to a conclusion without hearing/playing one. But I can see how my use of the word "ridiculous" may have been ambiguous.

It looks interesting. I like that it has no tone controls, just volume + selector. Apparently it was a limited run of 350 guitars. I'm guessing they're all in collectors' hands now. Maybe we'll see one in the next Ok Go video.

Re: Holy Explorer, Batman!

If I could pick one up super cheap, I'd glue some nice looking veneers on the front and back, refinish it, and call it good!

Re: Holy Explorer, Batman!

I would trust it a little more if they had resisted the temptation to remove wood between the pickups and hence on the way from bridge to neck.

Holely Explorer, Batman!

Holely Explorer, Batman!

They might have considered making that whole section neck end to strap button area the same width as the neck but it does look like it might be neck tenon width at least.

Kinda dig it as a life long "Explorer" shaped fan and may even end up with one someday. :headbang::headbang::headbang:

Maybe paint it Candy Apple Red Metalflake in Bass boat style sized flakes.:8: :33: :18:

Re: Holy Explorer, Batman!

I could display my collection of Precious Moments figurines in the spaces.

Re: Holy Explorer, Batman!

Those are collectors items , not players guitars.
A lack of wood on a solidbody is a novelty, and not optimal for tone.
