JBjr! :)

Re: holy wars

Hmm your best bet would be an Alder bodied axe with a JB in the bridge, plugged into a JCM800, no effects added just use amp gain. But since they're singles tell him to try a Hot Rails bridge with the gain on two or three o'clock, maybe a Lil '59 in the middle or neck to compliment the leads.

JB jr i am tellin ya :)

Re: holy wars

Keep in mind the JB Jr. has less bass than the original JB humbucker and it could get overly bright. The Hot Rails is very agressive and usually sounds like a real Trash pick up in the bridge. It'll also balance out more nicely, since I'm guessing it's an Alder bodied strat 3cents is talking about. He'll get more of a fat, agressive Dave Mustaine sound out of that one

Re: holy wars

On that record Dave Mustaine was using an Alder/Maple King V with an ebony fingerboard and a SD JB in the bridge. He was playing through a Bogner Fish preamp into a VHT 2150 poweramp. The secret ingredient is a BBE Sonic Maximizer for the extra top end sizzle.

Re: holy wars

Have you guys heard the NEW MIX of HOLY WARS

very very nice

that 8sec classical solo sounds soo much cooler!

Re: holy wars

holy wars eh? haha,
well i use a JB in bridge in my Jackson KE and it works perfectly for me.
Both dave and marty used JBs and its just great.

wats the new mix holy wars? never heard of it

Re: holy wars

You can download it on megadeth.com, it's pretty cool and you get to hear more of the drum and bass which always complimented Megadeth music extremely well during the 90's. Songs like She Wolf and New World Order are like timeless!

@Dystrust: That's funny because Marty keeps getting back to a Marshall 100W amp they used during the recording of Holy Wars. I downloaded an old show, and saw a lot of clips and Mustaine never seemed to touch Duncans untill the late 1995/96's. You can actually hear a huge difference in his sound between Youthanasia and Cryptic Writings.

Re: holy wars

The huge difference between Youth and Cryptic is the change in the amp Dave used. On Youth he was using a CAE 3+ SE into a VHT 2150, on Cryptic he used a Marshall JMP-1 into an EL-34 100/100.

BTW, the title of the new Megadeth Album is official. "The System has Failed" is due out in September.

Also Dave may not have been using SDs for Rust in Peace, but I have clips going back to Countdown that show a JB in the bridge of the Silver Sparkle King V he was playing for that tour.

Re: holy wars

Megadeth rocks! (with marty and menza of course)

no way! Rattlehead, Peace Sells, Looking Down the Cross, Wake Up Dead, Devil's Island.....now those are timeless Megadeth classics :)

are you kidding?! Mustaine was using the JB as far back as the So Far, So Good, So What days (circa 1988).

as much as I love Rust in Peace and Countdown to Extinction, I still think Peace Sells was the best album Megadeth ever released. the jazz influences that Chris and Gar brought to those songs elevated Megadeth well above other speed metal bands of that period. and the guitar tone on that album! :32: some of the best sounding Marshall crunch ever recorded to tape!

Re: holy wars

Err back in those days I'm sure he used the Bill Lawrence L500XL. During So Far So Good, Mustaine was fully introduced to Jackson guitars (he tried his own Custom Shops during the Peace Sells tour, but BC Rich Biches with L500XLs during the recordings). I think he was using Jackson pick ups on So Far So Good, but I'm not sure. I don't think he used Duncans back then though, the sound was completely different.

I personally like the better mixed albums like Countdown and Youthanasia, I don't think The World Needs a Hero should be taken for granted either but you gotta love Marty and Menza huh...:)

It's rather ironic that all of Chris's tracks on Peace Sells are a Rockman preamp. He used the Marshall strictly as a power amp. I think my overall favorite is So Far, So Good at least I like the most songs off that one. Any of the first four albums are hard to beat.

Dave had a DiMarzio Super Distortion in the bridge of his BC Rich Bich, you can see it in the video for Peace Sells. When he switched to Jackson King Vs the very early ones (So Far, So Good) he used a Bill Lawrence L500 in the neck and a JB in the bridge. The large difference in tone you hear between So Far, So Good and Rust in Peace is the change in amplification. So Far, So Good is master volume JCM 800s and Rust in Peace is a Bogner Fish into a VHT 2150.

Re: holy wars

You sure? We had a topic about Dave's old sound on the old board and some guy came up with lots of pictures with Dave's Bich with Bill Lawrences in both positions. When I play my L500XL I can totally nail that Peace Sells sound too

Re: holy wars

AFAIK Dave used Dimarzio's and Lawrences in the Bich.

As for the change I'm not sure when it happened but it looked like it was during Peace Sells.

As for the Jackson's on SFSGSW ... I know Dave had a Jackson King V with H/S/S config using Jackson Pickups ... but I'm not confident that it was his main guitar because I've only seen it in what, 2 pictures?
