Older members may recall that, for a time, selected Hondo II electric guitars and basses were offered with OEM DiMarzio pickups.

Does anyone have any photographs or specification details of these "offshore" pickups, please?

Omg Hondo! By far the worst guitar I've ever had in my hands... what a piece of ****!
Sorry no pic's and no that one had no dimarzio's. Are you talking about single coils or humbuckers?

The Hondo II's that I've seen are fine, the Hondo II Professionals are even better. I have an HIIPro that is nearly 30 years old, built like a tank and is still one of the most comfortable guitars, I own, to play.

I think I have the original pickups, I should look to see. For some reason I think they are Dimarzio's. Makes you wonder if they were decent after all and I was just ignorant, oblivious or desperate for a change.

Re: Hondo II offshore DiMarzio PUs

If they are humbuckers, there's a good chance they are Gotoh brand copies. I have a couple of Gotoh Super Distortion copies that aren't half bad.

but copied literally? Do they even say Dimarzio on them?

Granted, it's been over 5 years since I yanked them and resurrected that guitar but I'm pretty sure Dimarzio was etched into the baseplate. At least that's what my addled brain is telling me!

I hope I still have them, I'm awfully curious now

Nope, my don't. They do have a brass baseplate, hex poles, a big magnet and close to the same DC resistance reading as a real SuperD.

Re: Hondo II offshore DiMarzio PUs

They were advertised as being Dimarzios, though I've never come across one of those models in that ad.

Re: Hondo II offshore DiMarzio PUs

Darn, I forgot! Writing myself a note and tying a string around my finger to remember to read the note

Re: Hondo II offshore DiMarzio PUs

Thank you, everyone, for your replies.

Hondo definitely did offer guitars and basses with "Made By DiMarzio" pickups - usually with creme bobbins a la Super Distortion HB. These appeared on a variety of guitars from the matching S. D. Curlee guitar and bass to a flat-topped, screwed-on neck, LP-shaped model. When brand new, the pickups had removable clear plastic film covers proclaiming the DiMarzio involvement. (Just like the protective film over current Epiphone pickups name-drops Gibson.)

My original reason for asking is that I have acquired (yet) another Yamaha Attitude Plus bass guitar. The vendor claimed its non-original pickup to be "designed by DiMarzio". The only instance of "designed by DiMarzio" that I can ever recall is those Hondo II instruments from the early Eighties.

The specific pickup I have is a P Bass replacement with creme bobbin covers and rod magnet polepieces. I would expect a DiMarzio to have either hex headed screw poles, thin bar poles or hidden poles a la Will Power middle PU. Further, on the underside, there is a copper coated screening plate. The rods poke through this plate. Unfortunately, these details and the non-DiMarzio output cabling remind me most strongly of Powersound pickups.

The actual sound from the pickup is generally good except, maybe, for being a little light in the deep bass frequencies. That might just be the crappy old strings.

.... a flat-topped, screwed-on neck, LP-shaped model. .....

This pretty much describes mine. I no longer have them but I'm 90% certain that they were stamped Dimarzio on the baseplate and I'm 100% sure they SUCKED!!!

Re: Hondo II offshore DiMarzio PUs

I remember seeing the older cheaper guitars with Dimarzio's, think my Magnum had them:)

Re: Hondo II offshore DiMarzio PUs

Re: Hondo II offshore DiMarzio PUs

I've got a ZX-1 strat copy, hockey stick neck that had a Dimarzio look to it. I kinda took it apart & it's on my future projects list to put fix..Nice guitar maple neck plays well. Added two SD Hb's & it's great to go...Cheers

Re: Hondo II offshore DiMarzio PUs
