Honest Opinions Needed!....please

Re: Honest Opinions Needed!....please

don't ditch the singer. man, you DON'T want to sound like every other band, and this guy has some learning to do, but he has potential, just needs to learn to control his voice and not scream full out ALL the time. i presume that final master has not been applied. the drums are the weakest spot, if you have them on a a separate track, you might want to masterize it separately, and then masterize the full mix. u also might want to 'drown' the vocals a bit, so that they don't stick out in the mix. great for bad singers (myself included) and adds power, which is definitely desirable in your type of music. guitars and bass sound excellent, they are eq-ed properly. and don't do mastering yourself, take it to a pro, you'll never get it right.

Depends on the singer. If he gets the "I'm God" complex, he needs to be dropped. He's an entertainer by nature, and a singer, not just a singer, etc. There's more to singing for sure. While I can't stand Ozzy's voice, people love him because he's entertaining, so he does a good job. Anyways, for what it's worth, sure, give him space to learn and do what he wants. That always helps. However, like I said before, anyone can scream. Encourage him to do something other than scream and, if possible only scream using effects to do it.

How many bands out there sound almost exactly like Nickelback?
Following music industry trends is a recipe for becoming the next cookie-cutter stars. If that is what you want, I think you are on the right track. I think you guys have more potential than that, though, and trying to sound exactly like "As I Lay Dying" will only take you so far.

Metal is Metal....Old, Nu, Thrash, Death, Progressive. It is ALL relevant. Even MetalCore. Break these stupid genre rules and create your own sound.

+1 too many Nickelback bands. Nickelback is good, but the others annoy me to an extent. Cookie-cutter is a recipe for being forgettable. Try to do something new. While not everyone likes SoaD, for example, they are unique, they are new, they are good. When disturbed came out, to me they were different (same with the deftones), so I could at least listen to them.

I don't know. Maybe if/when the first album earns money, take a trip somewhere and spent time NOT being musical. Culture yourself. I find it sad that the bands that catch my ear lately weren't from the United States: they came here from somewhere else. Good on them: they did something new. SoaD was used to Armenian folk music (if i remember correct), Nickelback is from Canada, etc.

So try going somewhere and getting culture. I find that one of the sad things about most bands / most people I meet is that they've been no where other than their home town and are stuck in the same cookie cutter mold, musically. I'd almost rather hear a metal version of Vivaldi's Four Seasons than most the stuff on mainstream radio these days :D
