Hooking Up A 4x12

Do I need a special cable, or will a guitar cable do? My Marshall is still in the shop, but I was thinking of running my blues Jr through the 4x12, just to see how it sounds.

The cab is wired for 4ohm or 16ohm mono, and for 8ohm stereo.

Re: Hooking Up A 4x12

You probably could use a guitar cable, but it's best to always use speaker cable. A guitar cable designed for a different resistance and capacitance than a speaker cable. It might not do anything bad, but it could be risky.

No, you must use a speaker cable. Using a guitar cable could blow the head and cab both.

Re: Hooking Up A 4x12

Jeff, I've ruined a guitar cable using it for a speaker cable. Stick to using a speaker for speaker/guitar for guitar, can't go wrong then.

Thanks boys....I'll be off to Guitar Center AGAIN in the morning.

Re: Hooking Up A 4x12

The voltage between an amp and speaker is a lot more than that between a guitar and amp. You should use a speaker cable.

Having said that, I have used guitar cables between amps and speakers in the past and got away with it. :dunce:

Heh...he's not kidding ;).

If you solder a 1/4" jack onto the end of them, they make killer speaker cables.
