HOT brigde PAF

Hi guys

I´m looking for a bridge pickup for my Les Paul standard which is chambered.
I have the Burstbucker pro for the moment which reads 7,96kOhm.
I need a pickup which is louder, cleaner and brighter.
I would prefer if it where in the 9-12kOhm range and Alnico 5.
The other requirement is that it has to be AWG42 gauge copper wire...

I play very Randy Rhoads influenced and a little Van Halen but i don´t want the SD 78 because of it´s Alnico 2.

Would a hybrid pickup such a the combination of a 59/Custom5 be a good choice???

Take care guys:)

Re: HOT brigde PAF

The hybrid is great choice - I have one.

I'd also recommend the Screamin' Demon - sounds great IMO. Easier to get your hands on one too.

Re: HOT brigde PAF

I don't think so.

Maybe a custom shop pickup like a Brobucker then?

a hybrid would have 42 and 43 gauge wire.

Re: HOT brigde PAF

I´ve mailed SD so are waiting for their answer to se what they recommend...
A hybrid would be very cool either way, gonna see if i can find some used 59 and custom 5 or custom custom and build myself a hybrid

Re: HOT brigde PAF

a brobucker would fit the bill nicely, you might even like it with a full strength magnet

Re: HOT brigde PAF

A Suhr SSV+/DSV+ would be an option. 10K, A5 and I'm almost positive they use AWG42 based on the sound (you could email them and ask if you want to be sure though). Quite a bit less than a Duncan custom shop pickup. Also, it might look funny, but the PATB3 is also a hot bridge PAF. Almost 10K, AWG42, and A5. Less "push" than the DSV+ I have (although they were in 2 different guitars, so I couldn't do a direct comparison), but still a very nice pickup.

Re: HOT brigde PAF

Is the brobucker AWG42 guage copper wire???

yes, 42 pe just like the old pafs.

you really cant get much above 10k with 42 wire. you can squeak about 11k if you pattern it right but no way youll get 12k worth of 42 on two bucker bobbins and have anything that will sound good.

Re: HOT brigde PAF

Like Jeremy said the Brobucker is 42 gauge, as is the 78. However the S-deco is 43...I'm told that's darn near impossible to get much more than 10K of 42 gauge on a standard bobbin, so the 43 must be used. Additionally if you go with a hybrid you're going to have 42 and 43. So you're going to have to make some decisions about what's important. My personal thought is don't get hung up on wire gauge, if it sounds good it IS good. Additionally the 78 doesn't react like most A2 based pups, it is very aggressive.

Re: HOT brigde PAF

11k with 42 awg can be done, however it is NOT easy, and it will barely fit onto the bobbin. The resulting sound will be analogous to as follows: '59 : Light Truck Diesel as 11k Brobucker : Peterbilt 379. LOTS of low-end, lots of power, and not a great deal of mush. Be advised though that a PAF with 11k will be a fairly aggressive pickup even if the magnet is not at full strength. Mine is at "25" according to the CS meter, and even plugged into a fender champ 600 at 12 o'clock volume (ie: half throttle), it has very little problems getting "vintage AC/DC" to come out. I would first go with a normal brobucker as well. Even though it is "only" 10k, we are dealing with a Les Paul, and a chambered one at that (which, if you've seen how they're chambered brings it dangerously close to "semi-hollow" status). Too much power is going to make it feedback, and it'll sound horrid. Just go normal brobucker, uncovered, and voila.

I did try a Alnico 2 magnet in my Burstbucker pro bridge but it got to bright beyond the 12th fret on e & b strings but i´m using Gibson standard pots which may be the problem but i´m upgrading to RS Guitarworks modern kit in the near future.
The Hybrid version is a sort of compromise.
Pickups with thinner wire than AWG42 has always sounded thin to me...

The A2 got too bright? hmmmmm

I think you'll really like the RS kit, those guys seem to be on top of things.

I DO have a 59/Custom hybrid with double screw poles, and a deguassed A5 mag in my PRS IRW McCarty and it sounds GREAT. The double screw poles help grow the low mids.

Fair enough, just remember that with the 42 gauge you are capped at about 10k.

Re: HOT brigde PAF

rockfield SWC is 9.15k and they use 42 guage wire. it has alnico 5, sounds pretty much like what you're looking for..

I've not had personal experience with the brobucker, but from how people describe it, it would be good as well.
