Hot for Teacher... a couple of tapping questions

So I'm finally decided to learn something a bit more fun, and Hot for Teacher seems just great. However...
On the intro, all the tapping sequences (3 7 12 5 9 12 etc...) begin with the open string.
How can I pick it then use my picking hand to tap? :smack: it seems almost impossible to me. So far all I can do is just pick right behind the 12th fret, or tap the 12th fret so that only the open string rings. But I don't know what the 'correct' way is.

Cheers if you have any tips!

Re: Hot for Teacher... a couple of tapping questions

It's all finger tapping / hammer-ons / pull-offs. There is no picking in that part. Your pick hand index finger taps the 12th fret. Use your fret hand index and pinky fingers for the other frets. Start out slow and gradually work your way up to speed. Practice it clean too, it'll help with the technique.

I got the other parts too, I've been tapping for a while. It was just this damn '0' on the tab haha... I'll work on it cheers guys :)

Re: Hot for Teacher... a couple of tapping questions

For the open string at the start just lightly pluck it with your pick hand index finger (like metalspider said) and then hammer-on from there. Have fun. :)

Keeping that stretch up hurts. Good practice that is! Cheers guys!

Ya know, Rid. Every time I see EVH live, my jaw drops. I know how to tap and get tapped harmonics like he does but he just has something in him that makes it so incredible. He makes it look so easy it's sickening.

Thanks...LOL. Go figure that my 3,000th post would have something to do with EVH....LOL. I think it's a sign that I need to get some work done. :laugh2:

He makes it look easy because he's been doing it for 30 years.

Very true. But even on old bootlegs he makes it look easy. It's sick how much natural talent he has.
