I'm looking to upgrade my tele PUPs for something that'll put a good amount of punch in my sound. I play mostly higher gain rock 80s to modern. I want this set to be versatile enough for 80s rock, modern punk, pop punk, modern rock, and possibly some blues (more heavy/rock based blues) I like the hot rails demos but it's all pretty high gain. I'm wondering if they'll do classic rock alright? (Doesnt need to be perfect, I've got an lp with 57 classics for that) I'm considering the hot rails set, the hot for tele set, and the hot stack set (if its indeed hot enough) hoping for some user reviews/opinions to help me narrow it down.

My thought is that Hot Rails are a little higher gain for classic rock. They also don't seem bright enough for the styles you want to play. They also, in no way, sound like Tele pickups (which is the point). The Hot Tele pickups *do* still sound like single coil Tele pickups, just thicker and with more power.

a buddy of mine has a hot rails in his tele and he played rock blues and classic rock. they do just fine. the hot tele set is good for classic rock but dont know about modern rock. both are good sounding pups. the hot stack probably wont do what you want it to even though its a cool pup, it isnt very high output compared to the others

I have a Hot Tele Lead with a tap in one ofy guitars paired with a SM-1b in the neck. It's got plenty of punch and is dark enough for old metal and 90's alt rock and can stay coherent with modern metal levels of gain, *but* it's still a single coil and will hum when you throw a lot of gain at it.
IMHO, if you use a lot of gain regularly, you'd probably be happiest with a noiseless offering. If not, the STL2 is a GREAT pickup.

I have a customer that plays funk and R&B. He was a touring guitarists with Kool and the Gang.
He plays Strats, uses a Hot Rail at the bridge, and two Cool Rails. He doesn’t have problems getting a clean bright tone from it, and likes it for solos.
One thing you can do it add a series/parallel push-pull switch. In parallel the output and tone is similar to a regular single coil.
