Hot or Cool rails?

Now I'm wondering whether the hot or cool rails would be better suited for my cause?

I'm attempting to get a soloing tone similiar to the 'top gun theme/anthem,' 'hand on heart' (vai) and 'always with me, always with you' (Satriani). For a rhythem tone I'm looking for an 'enter sandman' type thing. The clean tone is kinda important, but nowhere near as important as the distorted tone.

Thanks all.

Re: Hot or Cool rails?

The Hot Rails has an amazing lead tone, and the Cool Rails is pretty sweet, too. It just needs to be pushed a little more than the Hot Rails. The Cool Rails has slightly better cleans. Is this for bridge or neck and what kind of guitar will it be going into?

Re: Hot or Cool rails?

I would suggest the Hot Rails for the bridge position and Cool Rails for the neck and middle. They will not sound like a full size humbucker though and that's what Satriani uses on Always With Me, Always With You. Through a Boss DS-1 (that's what Joe used for alot of tunes) and a nice tube amp you should be able to get a good usable tone for that tune...but it won't sound exactly like a full size humbucker. Thanks guys.

I forgot to say, this will be for neck position, and is going into a strat with an alder body.

Re: Hot or Cool rails?

i'd say 60% of hotrails go into the same thing man! :)

if you install a coil tap on the hot rail (search the SD website for this kinda thing) the clean tones will be much more usable, similar to a hot singlecoil's tone..

and it's on a switch, so you can flick between the two..

Re: Hot or Cool rails?

Hmmm, I'm thinking I might go with hot rails, and use the stock middle position pickup for my cleans. What you guys think of that?

go with the cool rails in the neck, I NAIL satriani tones with that, the hot rails is too fat and bassy, muddy to me. The cool rails sound great split too

+1 If you are really satisfied with your Mid position pick-up then utilize it, but I say the cool rails would be a great addition to the guitar.

Re: Hot or Cool rails?

I've got both in the neck position on different guitars, both paired with Distortions I might add. I've also got a Cool Rails in the mid of the guitar with a Hot Rails in the neck. With the guitar you've got and the tone you're looking for, I would say to lean more toward the Cool Rails. The Hot Rails would work, mind you and that coil splitting suggestion is a good one. But if you don't eq your amp just right, the Hot Rails can get a little muddy. The Cool Rails is a little more forgiving.

I do the same, usually my setup is cool rails, cool rails, distortion OR the same with a vintage rails in the middle.

Re: Hot or Cool rails?

Ok, So I'll get the cool rails. Later on I may buy some hot rails for my neck.

Thanks for your help everybody.

Re: Hot or Cool rails?

Remember, you can always exchange within 21 days if you don't like it (buying new of course).

Re: Hot or Cool rails?

i think the cool rails is the better choice for what you are looking for

Re: Hot or Cool rails?

Official retailer or direct.

+1 for the Cool Rails. I have both, but I think you'll be happier with the CR for your setup.
