Hot P-90 sound in a humbucker?

I really dig the sound of P-90s pups, but I'd like more output for playing metal, and the hum-cancelling of a humbucker is a plus (in a humbucker housing, of course). The Duncan Phat Cats and the DiMarzio Bluesbuckers seem cool, but is there anything else out there with more output that'll get me closer to what I like?

Take a Duncan Phat Cat and replace the Alnico 2's with Alnico 5's. If that doesn't work, just send it to MJ at Seymour and have her wind it hotter.

Isn't the Phat Cat a true single? Ie., not humbucking?

You are correct sir!

Another pickup to look at is Rio's Muy Grande. It doesn't really sound like a P-90, but it has a lot of single coil qualities with high output and is dead quiet.

Re: Hot P-90 sound in a humbucker?

It is a true single coil. I have one but can't give a good answer on the noise issue because mine is a neck pu and I use it only playing clean. It buzzes if I put it up next to the TV but that's about it.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the Rio Grandes! I've got a catalog of theirs somewhere around here. That might be a good choice. Thanks.

Rio Grande also has the Bastard and the Fat Bastard, which is their take on the Phat Cat, or vice versa...

Pssss...

I've you have a BBQ/Texas set & run the outer pups in parallel it sounds exactly like a P-90 equipped geetar (well as close as PhatCats will getcha), Plus! you get kick-arse humbuckers as well...

To my ears, Rio Grandes are totally overwound ... they're "quiet" because there's not top end!

Obviously you've never played a Tx/BBQ set...

Got em, put em in, played with em for a day, pulled em out and sold them for $5 to my nephew.

I think $5 was over-priced BTW...
